All very dreamy stuff, but alas, aspirations and reality are mostly parallel tracks and “Never (or seldom) the Twain do meet”.

Except for now, March 2020, in the most unfortunate circumstances. The Coronavirus is without precedent in Ireland. It is insidious, infectious and a real danger to us all. It has left us in a state of shock and fear.

But, and this is a big BUT..... we aren’t helpless. There IS something we CAN do for ourselves and our country.

So, before you don the green jersey, let me paraphrase the title of one of Taylor Swift latest hits and say “You need to calm down” Never before has our actions being so consequential for our country. Get out of the supermarkets (If we run out of toilet rolls, we can always revert back to the capppock leaf).

We are now on Ireland’s team and need to play the best game of our lives. We need to be team players, albeit at the requisite distance, and when needed, play solo.

We may think we are strong team members, but we have very important members that will be a little bit vulnerable when under pressure, so defend them when needed.

Every scintilla of our actions WILL have consequence on ourselves our our teammates.

So, respect the opposition even fear it, but don’t succumb to it. Wash your hands, 40/50 times a day. Keep self same paws away from any orifice on your body and keep your distance.

This era, as I said, is without precedent. We have a tough game on our hands, but our country needs us. Get out there, play the game of your lives and when the final whistle blows, please God, we’ll celebrate like Italia90 on steroids.

Stay safe.
