Mayor delivers special message

MAYOR of Drogheda Councillor Paul Bell has issued an Easter holiday message thanking the citizens for making the sacrifices and working to together to fight against and defeat the COVID 19 virus in our community.

“There are so many to thank but first of all I wish to thank every citizen of our town and district for your effort to prevent the transmissi­on of COVID 19. The washing of hands, social distancing and restrictio­n of travel are all dependent on each of us doing the right thing. And with the number of infections reducing from individual­s transmitti­ng the virus to other citizens this is a clear demonstrat­ion that the procedures set out the HSE, Government and World Health Organisati­on are having the desired effect,’ said the Mayor.

Mayor Bell also acknowledg­ed the difficulti­es for those citizens cocooning due to underlying health issues. “This form of isolation is very difficult as many of our citizens cooperatin­g with this tough ask are grand parents and are deeply missing their children and grandchild­ren. Amazingly despite the isolation our senior citizens have given great comfort to all of us both in their resilience and their experience having lived through many national and global crisis. They know that they are the living proof that when a community works together we will get through despite the heartbreak­s along the way”.

His praise extended to young people, who were showing they are the leaders of tomorrow.

Health workers, retail workers, workers in distributi­on and public transport. Post Office workers, Gardai, General Practition­ers and their front office staff and the many voluntary organisati­ons and individual volunteers supporting vulnerable citizens and communitie­s are also praised.

The Mayor concluded by offering his condolence­s to the families in the town who have lost loved ones to the virus. “I say to those citizens who have lost loved ones to this global pandemic that I am deeply sorry for your loss. And I acknowledg­e the suffering that citizens in this situation are going through. And that the pain of loss has been made worse due to the restrictio­ns now in place surroundin­g funerals which prevents gatherings and physical embracing and handshakin­g which are all essential in supporting those grieving for the loss of a loved one. The memory of your loved one will not be forgotten and will be remembered in hearts and minds of the citizens of Drogheda”
