Meath County Council and hard working councillors are continuing to serve
MEATH County Council continues to provide essential public services during the
Covid 19 emergency, in line with the national guidance and public health advice.
The Council seeks to ensure the right balance between service provision and the safeguarding of the health and wellbeing of Council members, staff and the general public.
This general approach has been strongly supported by the Cathaoirleach,
Cllr. Wayne Harding and the leaders of the other political groupings on the Council.
A meeting of the Council’s
Corporate Policy Group and
Party Whips on Tuesday
(April 7) unanimously agreed to cancel the scheduled meetings of the Council and its six Municipal Districts (MD) at this time of emergency, in order to give priority to the national and local efforts to contain the spread of the COVID- 19 virus.
This decision will see no formal Council or MD meetings in May. In making this decision, the political representatives considered: the legislation on the holding of Council meetings; the statutory business scheduled for decision, as well as, the IT options and practicalities of holding meetings in compliance with the public health guidance.
This decision will be kept under review and updates will be provided to Councillors on the provision of services and informal meetings will be scheduled at MD level, using online platforms.
On the cancellation of Council meetings, Cathaoirleach Wayne Harding said that “while all of us as Councillors are working harder than ever to do our jobs as public representatives and want to meet, discuss and make decisions on issues that affect people’s lives, we have taken this decision for the right reasons, which are to comply with the public health guidance and to not put the health of Councillors, Council staff and others at risk. That must take precedence at this time over any other considerations”.
Meath County Council frontline essential services continue and its support to the most vulnerable in the community through its Community Support Line – 1800 808 809 - operates from Monday to Sunday. The work of the Council will continue to be guided by the public health advice and latest national guidance.
