JACK DORAN WAS ‘A MAN LIKE NO OTHER’

-

THE business and sporting world lost a wonderful character in well-known motor dealer Jack Doran with his death last Friday.

His family described him as ‘a man like no other’ and said he will be greatly missed by staff, customers and the wider community..

Boyne RFC, to which he was closely attached, also paid tribute to the larger than life Jack.

‘We in Boyne RFC are devestated at his passing because Jack was loved and held in such high esteem by everybody in the club. He played a significant role in the founding of the club in 1997 and served as its first Secretary and later, as its President.

‘His loyalty as a member and sponsor was unstinting and he immersed himself in all aspects of the clubs activities with his wife, Rosemary, and his devoted son, Robert (Choco). His other son Mark, was also prominent is assisting with sponsorship and providing club cars over the years.

‘Jack wasn’t one to stand on ceremony and if he had anything to say, he said it with “both barrels”. But behind that facade, there was compassion and a heart of gold which, by choice, he never portrayed or sought any publicity or commendations. He assisted discreetly and offered advice in his own inimitable manner.

‘Like this scribe, Jack was a member of the referees admiration society and we shared several admonishments down the years for our over exhuberance during games and expressing our vociferous opinions as to how we deemed the ability, the “man in the middle” was officiating.

‘However, of one thing I’m 100% sure of, no rancour was ever held in anger for Jack by any referee and I know that his demise will be mourned among them as sadly as the rest of us.

‘Jack Doran was unique and from his arrival in Drogheda he made his mark in many facets of life. His business accumen, social skills, sports involvement (not just rugby) are testament to the personality of the man.

‘Drogheda and Boyne Rugby Clubs were fortunate to have him as a member and his service as President of both clubs and overall involvement will never be forgotten.

‘We join with his family in mourning and lamenting his sad departure from this life and sympathise with Rosemary, Robert, Mark and the immediate/extended Doran family.

Jack lived at Minnistown, Laytown, Co. Meath, and was the beloved husband of Rosemary and loving dad to Robert and Mark.

He is sadly missed by his wife, sons, daughters in law Liz and Sandra, grandchildren Chloe, Matthew, Reuben, Allie and Eva, brothers Gabriel, Anthony and Edwin, sisters in law, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
