Appleblossomwalking

- By FIONA MAGENNIS

THE Coronavirus restrictions may have put paid to the popular Apple Blossom Walk at Boyne Grove Fruit Farms but owner Olan McNeece has come up with a novel way to keep the tradition alive with a ‘virtual event’ at the farm.

Olan will take part in a live questions and answer session on Saturday, May 2nd and this will be followed by a livestream tractor ride through the orchard on Sunday, May 3rd before finishing up with a video of drone footage that evening.

The proceeds raised through the event will go to SOSAD and the Drogheda Homeless Aid.

This innovative event means you can enjoy the stunning view of the 80 acres of apple orchard in full bloom at the home of Dan Kelly’s Cider, all from the comfort of your own living room.

Olan will be live from the orchard at 3pm on Saturday to answer all your questions and anyone interested in taking part is ased to leave their questions on the Dan Kelly Cider Facebook page.

‘We will even pick a winner from all the questions to receive a box of our cider! Maybe you’d like to know how many varieties of apple trees we have, the importance of our bees, our different products and more? Let us know!’ said Olan.

Then on Sunday, 3rd May at 3pm there will be a live tractor tour through the orchards that the whole family can enjoy.

‘Later on that evening you will also get to experience the orchard from above and see 14,000 apple trees in full blossom with our drone footage. It is quite a stunning sight!

‘Seeing our orchard in full bloom is such a special time of year. We look forward to this event every year, as do the many hundreds of people who attend. Even though we can’t open our gates to the public this year due to the restrictions, we are delighted to still be able to share the beauty of our orchard and tell people about how we make our ciders, the history of the farm and more.’

This year, as people won’t be able to donate in person, the organisers are asking people to donate directly to Drogheda Homeless Aid and the SOSAD Organisation through https://www. gofundme.com/f/2020-boyne-grovefruit

‘Even more so than ever before, they need our donations to help them keep up the fantastic work that they are doing,’ Olan added.

This would have been the seventh year of the Apple Blossom walk which always proves to be a huge hit with children and adults alike and a fantastic day out over the May Bank Holiday weekend.

The orchard’s are famed as the home of Dan Kelly Cider which is made from apples handpicked from the family orchard, one of the few cider producers in Ireland who grown their own fruit.

The company produces a wide range of drinks alongside their famed original including Whisky Cask Cider, Single Variety Cider No. 1 and Coll’s Craft.
