Newtown Blues 1-5 St.Nicholas 1-3

Newtown Blues overcame the strong challenge of St.Nicholas in their home ground in Rathmullen. Scores were hard to come by although both sides had some very poor wides. At half-time, St.Nicholas led 1-3, 1-2, the Nicks goal coming from Aidan Carter and points via Ian Hackett and Owen Farrelly. Blues scorers were Alan Murphy 1-1 and Ronan Phillips 0-1. The second half saw very few scores. In fact the St.Nicholas side failed to score and the Blues had just three points, one each from Ronan Phillips, Keith Lynch and John Flanagan.

On the Blues side Michael Durnin, James Matthews and Breen Phillips in defence, midfielders Keith Lynch and Matthew O’Brien won this area but their forwards did not make the best use of possession but Alan Murphy, Ronan Phillips and John Flanagan took their scores well.

On a very gallant St.Nicholas team they had good defenders in Adrian Gates, Mark Grogan and Brian McCabe. Midfielder Des McDonnell tried hard to break up the Blues dominance at midfield and in attack Owen Farrelly, Ian Hackctt and Aiden Carter gave the Blues defence a busy time. The Blues now meet St.Marys of Ardee in the quarterfinal. Referee: Pat Carroll.

Naomh Mairtin 1-4 Clan na Gael 2-7

The Louth U/14 Final took place in Dunleer last Friday evening and it was Clan Na Gael who took the honours at the finish.

They took the lead but the Mairtins first attack produced a fine point from Salah Rufhi after great interplay by the forward line. Naomh Mairtin then took control of the game in midfield but despite a lot of pressure, three wides was all they had to show for their efforts.

The better performances for Naomh Mairtin came from midfielders Neil Kelly and Salah Rufhi and also James Allen in the backs. Ronan McQuillan got some great points and Barry Finegan found the net.

St Joseph’s 1-16 Hunterstown 2-13

A Mickey Durnin point one minute from the end gave Hunterstown Rovers a deserved draw against St. Josephs in Sunday’s Cooley Distillery Senior Championship quarterfinal at Tallanstown.

Both teams provided tremendous fare for the biggest ‘gate’ of the season and no one will be disappointed that they have to do it all over again. This clash had everything, particularly in the second half, when the sides went point for point after an early Paddy Kilcoyne goal wiped out Joes half-time lead and put Hunterstown in front for the first time since the opening minute.

Hunterstown were quickest off the mark thanks to Durnin, but it was the Dromiskin men who sprinted clear and by the eighth minute they had notched four points on the board courtesy of Alan O’Connor, Philip Duffy, Martin Mulligan and David Reilly.

In the opening ten minute period Hunterstown need not have been that far in arrears as Dessie Levins was short with a couple of efforts at points. Against that, Joes fullback Enda McKeown was having a solid game ai full-back. In the 13th minute Joes went 0-5 to 0-1 up with a Niall Giblin free following on from a fine catch by Adrian O’Sullivan. Hunterstown mentors realised something had to be done and they brought John Levins, hero of the win over Clans to midfield, swapping places with Raymond Callan who went to the ‘forty’

This switch paid rapid dividends as John Levins notched a point, but almost immediately John Fox restored the four point advantage.

Callaghan, Ciaran Matthews, Jim Matthews, Richard Rock, Dessie and John Levins, along with Callan:and Durnin were leading lights for Hunterstown Rovers.
