Cake Fairies delivering some tasty goods to the cocooners

- By ALISON COMYN

YOU’VE heard of fairy cakes, but what about Cake Fairies?

If you know someone cocooning who deserves a tasty treat delivered to their door, two Drogheda women have taken on the task of cheering up some of the senior members of the community, with surprise deliveries of cakes during the Covid-19 crisis.

Tanya McCabe and Elaine Donnelly both found themselves temporarily out of work due to the lockdown, so decided they would like to do something nice to help those in need.

“We both have young families, and knew we would be stuck at home for a while, so got the idea of collecting money for cakes to take to older people who might be on their own, or cocooning and not able to get out for a treat,” says Tanya, who normally works in Dublin Airport. “Cocooning is not easy, as they are missing their walks or they are missing their friends, so when we have the cakes, and a list of people who have been nominated, we take to the streets on a Friday morning, and surprise 50 people with some delicious cakes, leaving a note telling them they have been nominated by someone who loves or misses them.”

Like so many good ideas in Drogheda at the moment, it started on the facebook page Drogheda Dolls, but money can be donated and nominations made via email or mobile phone too.

“We can’t believe what a great response we’ve had and even Lidl has come on board now and the manager of the Donore Road store Michael Hennessy donated €50 worth of cakes for us to deliver, on top of what we collected,” she says. “Some of our Senior Heroes – as we call them - know they have been nominated and are expecting us to arrive, but for some it’s a lovely shock, and they are the nicest ones!”

The ladies can now accept shop bought, but not homebaked cakes - or €2 donation and they will deliver to a nominated senior hero in our community to have with their cuppa.

“We can organise a pick up point or you can PayPal or revolut your donation and we will pick up the cakes,” explains Tanya. “We will then deliver with a little note to say they’ve been nominated as a senior hero while keeping social distance”.
