Albion to Lourdes in aid of OLOL

- By FIONA MAGENNIS

ALBION Rovers Football Club will cover the hundreds of miles in distance from Albion to Lourdes in France - all while staying within their 2km limit - to raise vital funds for Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.

Some 40 senior players and management members at the club will take part in the event, covering a total distance of 1932.8km, in the hopes of raising €2,500 for the Drogheda Hospital.

The Gofundme page was created on Thursday with a target of €2,500 and has already raised almost €500.

‘We are trying to do our bit for our community by raising money to help our local hospital in the fight against the Coronavirus,’ said the club’s Senior Secretary Johnny Campbell who is organising the fundraiser. ‘Basically, between everyone we are going to run the distance from Albion to Lourdes in France. We just wanted to do our bit to show our support for the Lourdes, we are so lucky to have it on our doorstep. We look for the support of the community throughout the year so with everything that’s going on we decided it was time to give something back.’

He said each of the 40 members will cover roughly 50km each during the course of the month of May.

‘We were planning to get it out a bit earlier but with not being able to meet up it takes a bit more planning it’s hard to get everyone on the phone at the same time,’ said Johnny.

‘ The lads are out trying to keep their fitness up anyway so we said this was a good way to keep them motivated and raise some money for the people who are doing the most important job at the moment. These are the people who are keeping us safe so we want to do something for them.’

He said we are blessed to have such an amazing facility on our doorsteps, particularly in times like these when Covid-19 is having such a huge impact on the town and the country as a whol.

‘We never know when somebody we know may be affected by this virus so we wanted to do what we could to support the heroes on the frontline,’ he said.
