New journey in the Adult Learning Service

LEARNERS QUICKLY ADAPTED TO NEW WAY OF TEACHING ONLINE

- By ALISON COMYN

LIKE many other agencies across the world, Louth and Meath Education and Training Board’s (LMETB) Adult Learning Service had to completely change the way they deliver their services in recent months. Free online classes being delivered are an example of the dedication and creativity of the team of tutors in King Street during the Covid 19 pandemic. A range of online options have been developed as a response to the closure of the centre due to the lockdown.

The Adult Literacy Organizer, Kinga Byrne acknowledged that in order to facilitate the ongoing learning for clients of the service, they had to approach teaching and learning in a very different way and creativity was a key factor in the process of engaging with learners.

“Not all learners have access to technology, so we have used work packs, Youtube videos, phone calls and text messages to ensure engagement with as many of our learners as possible,” she said.

“The continuation of the classes could only have been achieved thanks to the commitment of our amazing staff who have not given up during these challenging times.”

Kinga went on to describe some of the courses which have been offered since the centre closed.

“A full range of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Language),

Literacy, Maths and Computer courses have been offered to clients and the attendance level in these courses has been very high. Learners who have access to technology have their classes on online platforms such as Zoom and Skype and these have proven to be very successful,” she addd. T” he learning curve was steep for both our learners and tutors and we were all in the process together.”

They also offered a range of courses to both primary and post primary schools and one of the courses which proved popular was Prepare your Child for Secondary School, a programme to support parents and students in their transition from primary to post primary school.
