ADHD app changing lives for families

- By ALISON COMYN

A recently launched app is helping to support families affected by ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). THE Changing Lives Initiative is a community-based initiative which works to create a better understanding of ADHD and provides an intervention programme for families with children aged (3-7) experiencing behaviours consistent with ADHD.

It is providing invaluable support to parents during these unusually tough times where families are under added strain due to Covid-19 restrictions.

As many as 5-6% of school aged children are affected by ADHD and to date, the project has provided an intervention to almost 1,500 families.

The app helps families understand what ADHD is and provides practical strategies and tools for parents to use with their children.

It is particularly relevant for parents who have concerns about their child’s behaviour but are not yet sure if their child has ADHD. The App is also extremely useful for those working with children in helping them understand ADHD and how they might support children who have issues with inattention, hyperactivity or impulsivity. The App is supporting remote and rural delivery of the Changing Lives intervention to families; and is providing access to the intervention for those who cannot access the programme face to face.

ADHD is the chronic, debilitating disorder which has a substantial effect on many aspects of a person’s life, from family and school life to their social environments. It is characterised by considerably high levels of impulsivity, hyperactivity and inattention. As well as providing support to families, the programme provides training for those working with young children, in particular teachers and early years professionals.
