WALK AND TALK ON PATRICK SMITH

-

Historic “Walk n Talk” Evening. Community Historian, Brendan Matthews will present a Special “Walk n Talk” this Wednesday evening, July 1st to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Patrick Smith, the 20-year-old Drogheda man who gave his life for Ireland on July 1st 1920. Patrick Smith and indeed a second Drogheda man, were part of a British Army Regiment Stationed in India when they, amongst others, took a gallant stand against their superior Army Officers as a protest against atrocities that were being carried out in Ireland by the Black & Tans.

This “Walk n Talk” will begin at the gates to St. Peter`s Church of Ireland, Peter St. Drogheda at 7.30pm sharp where Brendan will speak about events in Drogheda and across the country during the early summer of 1920 and the response undertaken by Irishmen who formed part of the Regiments within the British Army in India. The “Walk n Talk” will then move the short distance up Magdalene Street to the Green Space area at Rope Walk/Patrick Street, where both of these Drogheda men resided and where Brendan will finish the evening by retelling the tale of this particular mutiny which resulted in the shooting dead of Patrick Smith exactly 100 years ago to the day; July 1st 1920.

Please Note. There is no charge for this event, however Donations (Community History Research), will be gratefully accepted. For further details contact Community Historian, Brendan Matthews at 086-2260158. E mail brennersm@eircom.net
