Knights of Malta event

January 1957

-

THOUGH far from the decrepit old-man stage, we might have felt like spring chickens on Sunday. For we were in the midst of about 4,000 years of life.

We figured the combined ages of our “associates” to be in that region.

A 10/- contribution from members of the local Knights of Malta Unit ensured that about forty old ladles had everything from snuff to rock ‘n’ roll at the Christmas Party in the Drill Hall.

This Party, with all its delightful edibles, was the second annual given by the K.O.M. to the town’s old folk (ladies only !).

Oldest in the group as far as we could discover, was Mrs. Brigid Fulham, of 1 Glenview, at 78. Then around the 75 years mark were Mrs. Dunne, Sunday’s Gate; Mrs. M. Hanratty and Mrs. A. Tindley, Hardman’s Gardens, and Mrs. Farrell, of Magdalene Street.

Entertaining the temporarily rejuvenated lot were Oliver Kelly, M.C. and soloist; Mrs. Nugent- Cunningham (pianist), Prairie Ramblers, Seamus Brannigan (harmonica), Vivien Pentony and Teresa Owens (Irish dancing), Tom Sullivan (accordion), Vols. Rose McMahon, Marie Condra, Sheila and Olive Lynch, Llam Carter and the Harmonica Aces.

Also presnt were—Right Rev. Mon. Stokes and Rev. J. Lennon.
