DROGHEDA’S REPUBLIC OF IRELAND INTERNATIONAL
Best match you ever watched?
Probably the most recent Ireland men’s game against Italy [at Euro 2016]. The Robbie Brady header to win 1-0 and make it through [to the knockout stages].
The feeling watching it was incredible. Made me so proud to be Irish.
Best game you played in?
Internationally, the European Under-17 Championship semi-final against Germany when we won 1-0 [Megan scored the winner with a 30-yard free kick!].
Club-wise the 2017 Women’s FA Cup Final against Birmingham when we won 4-1 and I had my family there supporting, flying the tricolour in Wembley Stadium.
Best goal you’ve ever seen?
There’s a few amazing goals that I’ve seen in my time, both male and female.
Gareth Bale’s overhead kick against Liverpool in the Champions League Final, Stephanie Roche’s goal for Peamount United, Vincent Kompany’s pivotal goal against Leicester to win 1-0 [the week before Manchester City clinched the 2019 Premier League title], Carli Lloyd’s [for the USA] in the 2015 World Cup Final against Japan.
I know that there is many more too. It’s so hard to choose!
All-time favourite player?
It has probably got to be Nemanja Vidic. Growing up as a kid I looked up to him as a player I wanted to be like.
Best player you played with?
There is too many to choose from, but I am now fortunate to be playing with people I considered to be role models growing up, like [England internationals] Steph Houghton, Lucy Bronze and Jill Scott.
Funniest player you played with?
At club level Jamie Fields (Florida State University) and Jill Scott (Man City).
Internationally, [Republic of Ireland goalkeeper] Grace Moloney is one of the funniest people you can come across!
Favourite sport outside soccer and who you follow?
I don’t think I have one. Whatever is on the TV I will watch - I just love sports in general.
Best soccer memory?
Making my international senior debut in front of my family and friends at 17 years old.
Worst soccer memory?
Losing any football match is horrible. I’m too competitive to have any feel worse than another!
If you could change one thing about the League of Ireland...
I would like the see the Women’s National League get to a full-time basis, with players being paid adequately so that girls in Ireland can also pursue their dreams of just playing football.
A lot of female players have two jobs outside of playing amateur football five days a week.
Megan Campbell, who turned 27 on Sunday, is a Drogheda native who plays for Manchester City in the English Super League and is a Republic of Ireland international, renowned for having one of the longest throw-ins in world football. In her youth she played for Grove Rangers, Boyne Rovers and Moneymore and attended Our Lady’s College Greenhills.
