Top climate change award for the girls from Duleek

-

EARLIER this year the girls in Ms. Costigan’s 6th class in Duleek G.N.S. began writing and publishing their own story about climate change.

This was part of the Junior Entrepreneur programme, an all-island programme, empowering children to turn their ideas into a working business in their classrooms. Although the programme came to an abrupt halt at the onset of COVID-19 which marked school closures, the girls had managed to sell many of their popular products.

The heart-warming children’s story book with a clip-on koala proved to be timely and popular. The girls attracted the attention of national media and were thrilled to receive a visit from RTE News2day to their classroom in February. News2day are hoping to interview these girls again in August this year. Even President Michael D. Higgins wrote to the girls expressing his delight at their work.

The girls in 6th class are rightly proud of their achievement, having won Class of the Year from a total of 585 classes, from every one of the 32 counties who participated in the programme since September last year. The whole school were behind this project as the 6th class girls led the way in hosting koala fashion shows and other events to highlight the significance of climate change to their peers.

The girls would like to thank everyone who has supported their project this far as it continues to highlight the devastating effects of climate change. A special word of thanks to Dr. Eric Clinton, Gavin Duffy, John Purdy and Orla Stafford for sharing their knowledge and expertise with the girls and for their support for this project.

The girls are donating a percentage of the profits to charity and also hope to support some good causes closer to home following the difficulties caused by COVID-19.
