Bolster’s star turn at Irish Awards

LEE Callaghan led the way for Cushinstow­n AC when he enjoyed medal success on Saturday last on day one of the Irish Juvenile Indoor Championsh­ips in Athlone.

Lee put in some great leaps to win a silver medal in the U19 triple jump event, while Cian Rohan was also in action and put in a great performanc­e in the U13 high jump.

The previous weekend Cushinstow­n’s Laura Bolster received an Athletics Ireland All-Star award for 2023 for Meath at the National Juvenile Awards in Mullingar – a great achievemen­t for Laura and reward for all her hard work throughout last year.

Elsewhere, day three of the Meath league and Meath indoor championsh­ips took place in the National Indoor Arena recently and Cushinstow­n had 17 athletes competing on the night, many of whom came home with medals and new personal bests.

At Senior level Amy Callaghan competed in the long jump and shot put, winning both events, while at Junior age level Lee Callaghan, James and Peter Bellew put in great performanc­es in the long jump, high jump and shot put events.

Lee came second in the long jump and third in the high jump, while James placed joint first in the high jump and second in the shot.

In the U11 long jump, Nina Hall won a silver medal and Emma Moore a bronze, while Isla Butcher and Lauren Hetherton also put in some great jumps.

The girls also put in great performanc­es in the U11 high jump and 60m sprint.

In the U11 boys’ events Benjamin Mifsud, Dara Deasy, Caleb Coombes, Oscar Cudden and Tadgh McManus put in great performanc­es in the long jump and sprints, while Oscar and Tadgh also competed in the high jump, with Tadgh coming joint second.

In the U14 girls’ events, Keelin Hetherton, Kate Broderick, Lucy Jo McMahon, Kayla Grehan, Maria Traynor and Madisyn Crosby put in some brilliant performanc­es in the 60m and 200m sprints, long jump, high jump and shot put events. Keelin came first in the shot, while Lucy Jo placed third in the 200m.
