Peamount ’keeper a thorn in Rovers’ side

-

PREMIER SUNDAY

BOYNE Rovers returned to action on Sunday after a two-week absence and Alan Connor’s side were beaten by promotion-chasing Peamount United.

The 4-1 scoreline in some ways flattered the visitors as goals 60 seconds either side of the half-time break were Rovers’ undoing.

The Drogheda side have had a habit of conceding early goals, but Connor’s men were much more in control in the opening 45 minutes.

Indeed they had the better of the chances. Ben Buckley went close with two efforts and the second of those drew one of the best saves seen at Parkview in recent times. Had that gone in there might have been a different outcome.

Darren Thornton also was denied by the keeper and Ben Buckley was another player who went close to breaking the deadlock.

Peamount hadn’t threatened too much, but in the 45th minute they broke down the wing and a cross into the box saw a free header allowed and they duly punished the home side – a real sucker punch.

Straight from the restart a direct move saw Peamount double their advantage, and so from almost nothing the Dubliners had a twogoal lead.

Rovers were then forced to chase the game and that left them exposed at the back. With 20 minutes remaining Peamount hit their opponents on the counter for a three-goal lead.

Rovers did get a consolation goal on 80 minutes through Darren Thornton, but as they continued to push they were caught out and a fourth goal came right on 90 minutes which put a gloss on the score from a Peamount perspective.

Boyne Rovers continue to occupy a mid-table position in the Premier Sunday division.

With 10 games remaining Connor’s team look to be comfortable, although promotion is very much out of reach barring a collapse at the top of the table.

On Easter Sunday morning

Rovers travel to a Kilcock Celtic side who trail the Drogheda team by four points.

Drogheda United were due to host Monread FC on Sunday in the Polikoff Cup, but the game was called off.

Mickey Matthews’ team are in cup action again this Sunday as they welcome Verona FC to Marley’s Lane in the Albert Walsh Cup.

A win for Drogheda would put them in the last eight of a competition in which they were semi-finalists last season. Kick-off on Sunday is 1pm at Marley’s Lane.
