Half a season still to run for beaten Town

- PJ MURRAY

DROGHEDA Town’s mini revival came to an end on Friday night as Seán Brennan’s side went down away to MP FC in their Division 1B Sunday clash.

The Dublin side are currently chasing promotion and had only lost three games at home all season, while Town are in a somewhat false position towards the bottom of the table as they have several games in hand.

Indeed, this match marked only the half-way point in their league campaign owing to a number of previous postponements.

Conditions at the Grangegorman Astro were cold on Friday night, but given the recent bad weather there weren’t too many complaints.

Town started poorly and despite some good saves by Luke Haggins, Brennan’s team conceded three disappointing goals. Indeed the keeper would turn out to be Town’s best player on the night.

Conor Parkinson pulled one goal back on 75 minutes, but it was too little too late for the Boynesiders.

MP FC were far from the side who have dominated some recent fixtures, but Town’s performance ensured that the scoreline flattered the hosts.

Nevertheless, Drogheda have a big chance now to bounce back and also ease any slight relegation worries as they travel to Leixlip United on Friday night.

The Kildare side are second bottom in the table, five points behind Drogheda with three games more played.

The teams met at Blackstone Motors Marian Park back in October, with Drogheda running out 2-1 winners on the night.

A win for Drogheda would further cement their place in the middle of the pack in the 1B division.

Kick-off on Friday night at the Leixlip Amenities Centre is 8pm.
