Late major crushes St Colmcilles’ Feis Cup hopes

- SEÁN WALL

DONAGHMORE/ASHBOURNE and Simonstown will contest the Feis Cup decider following semi-final wins over St Colmcille’s and Wolfe Tones respectively.

The Ashbourne men enjoyed home advantage as they overcame St Colmcille’s, 1-8 to 1-5. It was 0-4 to 0-2 to the hosts at the end of a low key opening half. Matthew Breen netted for the eastMeath outfit within two minutes of the restart and the sides were level at 1-4 to 0-7 midway through the final quarter.

The eventual winners led by the minimum before Seán Tyrell struck for the decisive goal on 58 minutes which was enough to give them the victory.

Wolfe Tones made the short trip to take on neighbours Simonstown but were no match for the hosts who eased to a 2-15 to 0-9 win. Simonstown had one leg in the decider when leading by 2-9 to 0-5 at half-time and there was no way back for Tones after that.

The final is scheduled for next Wednesday, April 3, in Simonstown with throw-in at 8pm.

CORN NA BOINNE

St Patricks’ hope of retaining their Corn na Boinne was ended by

Oldcastle in Millbrook on a 0-10 to 0-6 scoreline. It was 0-5 to 0-3 to the hosts at half-time and Robbie Farrelly ended top-scorer for the winners with five points. However, the real hero was ’keeper Seán Maxwell who brought off a string of fine saves. Oldcastle now meet Meath Hill in the decider.

In the first of the Tailteann Cup semi-finals, St Vincent’s registered a resounding 2-16 to 0-4 win over Dunderry at Masterson Park.

Patrick McGill had the opening score, a goal, for the Ardcath men and they had 2-8 on the scoreboard before Dunderry hit their only point of the half from a free on 23 minutes. The game was over as a contest at half-time with

St Vincent’s leading by 2-10 to 0-1, with the second goal coming from Conor Harford.

TOP-SCORER

Adam Tuite eventually finished top-scorer for the winners with seven points and the Ardcath side will know their final opponents following the outcome of the other semi-final, between Slane and Kilmainham, in Dunganny this evening Wednesday with throwin at 8pm.

The last of the opening round matches in Division 1 of the football league took place on Sunday with Dunboyne coming away with both points from Simonstown, 2-13 to 2-10.

Earlier in the week, Summerhill edged Skryne, 0-14 to 2-7, holders Ratoath defeated Na Fianna 2-8 to 0-8, while Gaeil Colmcille also had a point to spare against O’Mahony’s, 0-8 to 0-7.

In Division 5, Slane made a winning start against Moynalty, the team they defeated in last year’s JB decider, 2-4 to 0-7. Podge McGowan and Alan Harding scored the goals as Slane led by 2-0 to 0-2 at half-time.

Eastern Gaels played their first-ever league match against St Vincent’s but came out the wrong side of a 2-16 to 0-4 scoreline in Division 10.
