Jimmy Cudden looking like he’ll run as an independent Labour candidate
May 1984
Duleek-based independent councillor Jimmy Cudden may make no further applications to rejoin the local branch of the Labour Party, it was learned this week.
And Cudden—his recent application was rejected by 12 votes to 8 after a secret ballot—could now stand as an independent Labour candidate at the next local elections.
Cudden, who resigned from the Labour Party two years ago, said this week that he had no plans either now or in the immediate future to submit a fresh application.
The ex-Labour man was responding to a statement by Duleek branch chairman Owen Harty that Cudden could appeal the recent branch decision or make a further application for consideration.
It is understood a meeting of Labour secretaries and chairmen in the Slane electoral area took place last week but Mr. Harty denied yesterday that Mr. Cudden’s position was discussed.
Sources close to Colr. Cudden hinted this week that he may abandon any plans he might have to rejoin the Labour Party and contest the next elections on an independent ticket.
In the Slane electoral area he is considered an effective public representative and the feeling among his supporters is that he would have little difficulty in getting re-elected without the aid of the Labour Party.
