BIKE WEEK CLICKS INTO GEAR
EVENTS AROUND THE COUNTY PROMOTED ROAD SAFETY FOR YOUNG AND OLD CYCLING ENTHUSIASTS
BIKE Week was a great success in County Wexford, with the county’s cycling safety officer Frank Burke praising the efforts of the gardai, civil defence and the clubs and their members who took part.
‘Hopefully more clubs will follow suit next year. People who give of their free time voluntarily to marshal road junctions etc. means that these events can go ahead in a safe and secure manner and parents can feel assured that their children are safe,’ said safety officer Frank Burke, adding that grants are available for those clubs taking part.
Several events took place as part of the week: The Lions Club in association with the county council ran a family cycle event in Enniscorthy, starting and finishing at Kilcannon Garden Centre.
There were two routes, the long route was 7km and the shorter route was specifically for younger children and measured 2km.
Ounavarra Family Cycle ran a well-attended 11km Family Cycle. This was am extremely well run where the safety of the cyclists was foremost in the minds of all the marshals and club members present.
KBK Velo Cycle Club also ran a very successful 7km Family Cycle from Kilmuckridge to Morriscastle.
Enniscorthy Bike Centre on Weafer Street sponsored all the children’s prizes for the three Family Cycle Events held during Bike Week.
Meanwhile, Stayin Alive at 1.5 ran a cycle event called 1.5 Ride from Bunclody. The 1.5 Ride comprised of two distances – a 50 km and 100km cycle over hilly terrain in the north of the county. This sportive was well attended with over 160 cyclists taking part.
