Councillors divided over support for school signs

-

‘WE need to starts somewhere’ when it comes to the construction of signage and lighting outside schools according to Cllr Johnny Mythen.

Cllr Mythen made the comment in light of a debate over the erection of two amber flashing lights and a ‘school ahead sign’ outside The Ballagh school. The councillors were informed that the school are seeking support from the council for the project but had agreed to pay 50 per cent of the cost themselves.

‘If they are willing to help themselves to help themselves, we should support them,’ said Cllr Oliver Walsh.

Cllr Kathleen Codd Nolan felt that they shouldn’t make the decision in haste, saying that there are many other schools seeking the same safety measures. She was backed up by Cllr Barbara Anne Murphy, who said that the ‘need’ for such lighting and signage at each school should be taken into account.

‘ There is a need there. There is a traffic problem in the area,’ responded Cllr Walsh. ‘If we have money leftover, then we can look at another project.’

Chairman Cllr Paddy Kavanagh noted that it is based on a regional road.

‘A decision needs to be made so it can be done for September,’ he said

Cllr Kavanagh assured them that any money leftover could be used for another project.

Cllr Walsh proposed w that they go ahead with the support, seconded by Cllr Willie Kavanagh.
