First green flag hoisted at FCJ after two years of hard work
THE staff and students of FCJ Bunclody beamed with pride recently when they hoisted the school’s first green flag.
Everyone at the school had put in great effort over the past two years to earn the Waste and Recycling Flag and are already eyeing up the next green flag which is awarded for energy conservation.
One of the key success factors of the GreenSchools programme is that it is a themed programme with participating schools undertaking the programme work through the seven steps one theme at a time.
The themes in sequence are: Litter and Waste; Energy; Water; Travel; Biodiversity; Global Citizenship - Litter and Waste; Global Citizenship - Energy.
At the flag raising ceremony special thanks were extended to the staff and students who sat on the Green Schools committee, the school caretakers, George and David Raleigh for their support; Cliona Connolly of Wexford County Council for her advice and school visits; Cllr Barbara Anne Murphy for her help with the school’s action projects where over 100 students participated in An Taisce’s community clean up and to the 1st year team who carried out waste and recycling clean ups every Friday: Martin Byrne, Craig Cullen, Evan Fagan, Laura Flynn Murphy, Grace Gill, Ciaran Kendrick, Barry Murphy and Fatima Yasin.
Fourth year student Peter Scully and Adam Raleigh of third year were also in line for special mention for their roles as waste coordinator and recycling coordinator respectively.
At the ceremony it was heard that taking on such a project was no mean feat in a school with such a large campus as the FCJ and ‘it had been a tough job to make sure that all parts of the school inside and out were without litter’.
