ROSSLARE LADIES

‘Come on ye boys in green’...no, sorry, I meant ‘come on ye girls in pink!’

That’s our club colours and we are in the quarter-finals, with our Junior cup team playing yesterday (Monday) against Wexford in Bunclody, and our Intermediate Cup team playing on July 4 against Wicklow in Courtown.

Also in the quarter-finals are the Revive team against Cahir Park, with the match still to be arranged. The Finn team has gone through to the next round, playing in Wexford on Saturday, July 9.

So yes, our army is on the march too and like the Irish soccer team it is a while since we have done so well. We haven’t got our songs sorted out, but if there are any supporters out there, come along, tickets are free and hopefully we will be singing ‘ole, ole’.

Tuesday, June 21, was a Scotch foursome competition, so hopefully no one fell out with their partner as each pair took alternate shots. No one wants to be landed in the long grass or a bunker or to land your partner there.

Mary O’Shaughnessy must not have gone near either this week as she came first on Tuesday and Wednesday! Last time she won she said in her winning speech it was all down to a lesson from our new professional, Jamie O’Sullivan. Did you have more lessons Mary, or should we be going to you now for the lessons?

Tuesday, July 5, is a v. par singles competition sponsored by Boggan’s Londis, Rosslare.

Saturday, June 18, open fourball: 1, Doreen McGovern (12/11) and Marianne Brennan (18/17), 45 points; 2, Bernadette Cuddihy (23/21) and Sheila Doyle (21/19), 41 points.

Tuesday, June 21, Countess of Granard Scotch foursomes/N.C.B.I., sponsored by Wallace’s of Wellingtonbridge: 1, Kit Codd and Mary O’Shaughnessy (15), 42 points; 2, Vandra Deacon and Elizabeth Callaghan (20), 40 points; 3, Norrie Goff and Niamh Byrne (15), 38 points (back nine); 4, Lynn Cronin and Gerarde Mahon (16), 38 points; front nine, Neasa Uí Ragnaigh and Bernadette Cuddihy (27), 21 points; back nine, Val Mernagh and Paula Stafford (16), 20 points (back six).

Wednesday, June 22, open singles stableford, C.S.S. 33 points: 1, Mary O’Shaughnessy (15), 33 points.

ROSSLARE

Congratulations to John Brady who had a tremendous win in the Leinster Boys’ Championship in Mullingar on Thursday. John (+2) had a seven-stroke win over his nearest rival.

He shot rounds of 72, 68 and 70 (six under par), the only player in the field under par. This is a great achievement for John who has two more years left in this grade. Brendan Rossiter with rounds of 74, 76 and 77 finished in the top 20.

On Saturday the Jimmy Bruen team made its exit from the competition when it failed to qualify for the matchplay stages in Bunclody. Sixteen teams competed for four places and after the five Rosslare pairings were in a strong position, a disastrous back nine by all pairings put paid to their hopes.

The team was Willie White and Joe Moran Jnr., Ken Maher and Billy Davis, Ian Cuddihy and Greg Kelleher, Dale O’Sullivan and Conor Brett, and Michael Geraghty and Mark Fitzpatrick.

Hard luck to all the players and to the manager, John Kelleher, who put in a big effort in preparing for the tournament.

Fourball: 1, Mick O’Connor (1) and Bill Underwood (18), 43 points; 2, Stephen Rossiter (14) and Pat Wright (20), 42 points.

Fourball: 1, Liam Duggan (7) and Tim Cummings (14), 43 points; 2, Tom McGrath (17) and Liam Bennett (18), 39 points.

Singles: 1, Niall Ellard (5), 40 points; 2, Cian Martin (4), 37 points; gross, Paul Murphy (scr.), 36 points; vet., John Scott (19), 35 points; 3, John Murphy (17), 36 points.

Fixtures: Saturday, July 2, Kerlogue Cup mixed fourball sponsored by K.D. Garage; Sunday, July 3, gents’ singles (G.O.Y. qualifier).

Results: 1, Trish Hanton (21), 71; 2, Martina Dempsey (20), 72; gross, Ruth Kennedy (5), 78 (back nine); 3, Tara Dunne (5), 73 (back nine); 4, Cathríona Walsh (14), 73; 5, Leonie Furlong (12), 74 (back nine); front nine, Patricia Boyd (21), 32.5 (back six); back nine, Mary B. O’Leary (35), 35; Senior, Eileen Kent (26), 75; nine-hole stableford, Noreen Power (17), 10 points; nearest the pin, Mary Walsh, six ft. eleven inches.

The first round of the J.J. Devereux matchplay has now been completed with the majority of the matches going the full distance and a few going to the 20th and 24th hole such is the competitiveness of these ladies.

The second round matches are to be completed by July 21.

WEXFORD

The club hosted a round of the Volvo Open Golfers’ Digest competition on Friday.

ENNISCORTHY LADIES

Junior member Aileen Brophy, who only took up golf in 2015, is certainly making great strides in the game and definitely going to be a star of the future.

Aileen brought in a wonderful score of 60 in last Tuesday’s medal competition, which was sponsored by Valentia Nursing Home, and she has now lost twelve shots this season.

That’s some going and congratulations Aileen. Seventy-four ladies participated and the full results were:
