ENNISCORTHY
Enniscorthy held a classic for the Co. Wexford ladies’ football last Friday, July 1. A successful and enjoyable day’s golfing was had by all 20 partaking teams held in glorious sunshine. Most teams were sponsored by various businesses and G.A.A. clubs.
In the ladies’ section the best team were the St. Fintan’s ladies with a score of 86 points comprising Ann Conway, Martina Dempsey, Janette Rice and Mary Rice.
In the men’s section the results were: 1, the Glynn-Barntown ladies’ team (Johnny Doyle, Garry Laffan, Michael Rossiter, Mick Walsh) with 93 points; 2, the Wexford County Council team (Brad Cohen, Gerry Forde, Jamie Mackey, Seán Mackey) with 91 points; 3, the Shelmalier ladies’ team (Laurence Carley, Theresa Kehoe, Andy O’Brien, Benny Travers) with 90 points; 4, the Fastway Couriers team (Billy Redmond, Patsy Farrell, John Roche, John Shalloe), 89 points (back nine); 5, the AMPM team (Michael Condron, Marie Dunphy, Shane Dunphy, Tom Dunphy) with 89 points.
The longest drive was by Josephine O’Connor on the fifth hole into the wind and just short of the ditch. Nearest the pin was 7’4” on the third green by Brad Cohen.
Denis Nolan was M.C. and thanked all and sundry for their combined efforts in making the day an outstanding success as it takes the co-operation of many individuals to pull off an event of this size. He went on to thank all of the sponsors, too many to mention, for their generous donations.

The Sunday evening nine-hole two-person team mixed scrambles with a shotgun start re-arranged from June 19 which was called off due to the inclement weather was played on Sunday, June 26. The mixed winners were Helene and Vinny Daly, with Maeve McCauley and Mick Wickham second. Gross winners were Marie Dunphy and James Morrissey, and third were Shane and Nikki Dunphy.

Our in-house Senior men’s group called ‘The Brittle Bones Society’ played last Monday week and the fourman winning team was Denis Coughlan, Mick Dee, Kieran Maloney and Larry Shaughnessy with 52.2 points.
On Thursday the winners with 51.4 points were Mattie Mernagh, Paddy Murphy and Neville Tector. Both games were over 15 holes and played in scramble format.

The Junior section is going from strength to strength with a significant number of youngsters having joined up lately. Is the next Leona or Rory amongst them? If you know of a youngster who might be interested, then please let either Vice-President Jim Hogan or Vice-Captain Jack Murphy know.
The clubhouse function room can be hired for private functions, christenings, communions, confirmation, birthdays, quizzes, weddings, conferences, retirements and funerals or any other function for that matter with bar facilities and catering available. There is a fantastic new offer available to anyone thinking of starting to play golf available at Enniscorthy. We call it ‘give golf a try’. It is a ‘learn to play’ membership for just €150.
For this you get three months’ membership which is available Monday to Friday, a group clinic with our resident professional, Stephen Fitzpatrick, on-course mentoring with some of our ‘seasoned’ members, free use of golf clubs if you don’t have any for the clinic, and special ‘learn to play’ competitions.
There is a limited availability on numbers for this so act fast if you wish to avail of this new and innovative idea over the summer months. If you should then decide that you would like to join as a full member, there is no joining fee and we will deduct the €150 that you have already paid from your annual subscription. Now that is what you call a deal!

Our new competition to the calendar recently started and is gaining in popularity judging by the number of players rising every week, the ladies’ and gents’ open singles, and is scheduled to be on almost every Monday until the end of September.
The entry fee is €5 for members and €10 for visitors, open to all membership categories. If you know of anyone who might be interested in this competition then please bring them along. Where else would you get such great golfing facilities for €10?
Next month’s sponsor of the gents’ Seniors is Caulfield’s SuperValu and the competition date is July 14.

The draw for our club singles/club fourball took place recently and the finish date for the singles preliminary round has now passed. The second round has to be completed by July 10. The first round fourball has to be completed by July 13.
There will be no extensions to the completion dates. The only rule change this year is in the club fourball where the 3/4 handicap difference has been replaced by 9/10. All matches are off of the blue pins.
How is your golfing knowledge? We will be running a golfing quiz on Friday, August 5, at 8 p.m. (please note change of date). All questions will be on golf. It will be a fun quiz and not too hard; the questions will not be the likes of who won what from 40 years ago and rules/regulations interpretation and the likes.
It will be much more general and quirkier than that. There will be no Tom Watson questions Matty! It would be great if our members could get teams of four from other clubs to come along as well to add to the spice.

COURTOWN
Our Captain, Pat Walsh, held the qualifiers for his Captain’s prize over Saturday and Sunday with great turn-outs on both days. Pat promised no tricky pin positions but some would say that was the case while others might not.
Some great scores of 68 were recorded which will lead to another fantastic final day next Saturday. Anyone who scored 78 nett and some 79s all qualified for the final day.
Congratulations to the Junior foursomes team which had a fantastic win over Carlow and is now into the semi-final. Well done.
Best of luck to all involved in the quarter-final of the mixed that takes place on Friday at 5 p.m.

First prize went to Sorcha Howell (4) (4) and Denise Kavanagh (14) (13) with 43 points. Second were Helen Mundow (30) (27) and Frances Sinnott (27) (24) with 42 points. Third were Kate Sheehan (19) (17) and Mairéad Sunderland (19) (17) with 41 points. Fourth were Mary Halford (24) (22) and Maria Coone (11) (10) with 40 points, and fifth were Carole Barnwell (16) (14) and Catherine Quinn (18) (16) with 38 points (back nine). The nine-hole competition was won by Mona Sheehan (30) with 18 points.
Congratulations to our Junior Foursomes team managed by Frances Swords which beat Carlow in Coollattin last week and is now through to the AIG District semi-final against Tramore.
NEWROSSSENIORS
With heavy rain forecast and dark clouds hovering overhead, it did not look good for our outing last Thursday. But once again we defied the forecasters and the gods looked kindly on us except for the odd passing shower.
It was none too warm however for the last day of June with a north-westerly wind keeping temperatures down to something that we would have in the autumn.
Eleven teams took part in the competition and here we had a three-way tie before the eventual winners could be announced. After a countback over the last nine holes (44/42), Michael Lee (16), Eamon Delaney (16), Johnny Watson (18) and Frank Boyle (21) were declared the victors with a final tally of 88 points.
In second place again after a countback on the last nine holes (42/41), Paddy Shannon (10), Michael Gannon (17), Aidan O’Connor (19) and Jim Kehoe (24) again with 88 points filled the runners-up position.
On the same score (88 points), John Shalloe (5), Larry Doyle (19), Martin Forristal (20) and John Joe Murray (21) were placed third. Nearest the pin prizes went to Michael Gannon and Martin Hartley.
Next Thursday, July 7, we will take names and entry fees (€15) for our eagerly-awaited outing to Dungarvan Golf Club on Monday, July 25. We will play in their open Seniors singles competition and in addition we will have our own four-person team game with the usual prizes on offer.
Also on Thursday we are having a raffle to raise funds to sponsor a team in the upcoming Pro-Am tournament in New Ross. Tickets are only €5 each and your kind support would be very much appreciated.
Manning the draw board for July are Willie Whitty, Dick Cahill and Les Jastrebski, and all players are asked to be sure to clock in with them well before the team draw at 10.40 a.m. sharp.
