BLACK AND AMBER TEAMS REMEMBER THE EVENTS OF 1916
ON SATURDAY, June 25, Adamstown GAA and Adamstown Ladies Football Club joined forces with their local communities to celebrate teams past and present and to commemorate Easter 1916. TJ McDonald, chairman of the Coiste Na nÓg, welcomed everyone to this very special occasion and acknowledged that the GAA and Ladies Football Associations had made a wonderful contribution to the communities of Adamstown, Newbawn and Raheen. Patrick Fortune raised a green and white flag which was the original flag adopted by the club. Ann Kent raised the black and amber Flag representing the colours that all the teams of today wear with great pride. The events of Easter 1916 were also remembered. Frances Doyle was invited to raise the tricolour. Down through the years Frances made a significant contribution to both clubs. Bernie Murray and her choir led everyone in the National Anthem and Fr Nolan prayed for all members of the clubs, past and present and sought protection for all players on the field of play. The community was gifted a beautiful 1916 Proclamation Stone from Wexford County Council, which was unveiled by club vice-president Jim Wickham. Members from the under-16 teams read the Proclamation that was first heard on Easter Monday outside the GPO. Local historian Jimmy Mc Donald gave a brief account on what was happening in the club circa 1916. Special guests on the day were the very successful Ladies football team of 1988 and the hurling team of 1970/71 Presentations were made to them by Dessie Doyle (GAA chairman) and Ted Bradley (chairman Adamstown Ladies Football). There were exhibition matches from the underage teams and a hurling match between a ‘1916’ team a present team. The GAA club on the day, were very proud to launch their website, adamstowngaa.ie. Running simultaneously were photo- graphic and memorabilia exhibitions, the national school t-shirt design display, a draw for a commemoration cake (won by Tony Feeney), free draw for 2017 membership (won by Frank Gorman, Kellystown, a member of the 1970-71 team), face painting, a barbecue, games and skills, teas, refreshments and shop.
