HURLING BLITZ

The Martin Byrne Memorial Hurling Blitz was held at Duffry Rovers club grounds, Coolree on Saturday, June 25. The annual event is played in the memory of the late Martin Byrne, Mohurry who played for the Duffry Rovers club. Eight under-12 teams took part: Rathnure, Oylegate-Glenbrien, Marshalsto­wn-Castledock­rell, Cloughbawn, Askamore-Kilrush, Davidstown-Courtnacud­dy, Craanford and Duffry Rovers. Congratula­tions to Cloughbawn who were the winners of the cup and to Rathnure who won the shield.

The presentati­on to both teams was made by Ann and Vincent Byrne who congratula­ted the winners and all the young people who took part. Damien Fitzhenry presented the medals. The event was very well attended and all had a very enjoyable day.

COMMUNITY PLAYSCHOOL

Blackstair­s Community Playschool closed for the summer holidays on Tuesday last week June 28 after a very successful year.

On Wednesday, June 29, fifteen children who are leaving to attend primary school in September had a very enjoyable graduation party which was attended by their parents. The children staged a little show and each child received a scroll and a present.

On June 13 all the children enjoyed their annual outing which this year was to Playzone in Wexford. The annual summer camp – open to playschool children – began yesterday July 4 and will run for two weeks where the children will enjoy many activities including games, art, craft and visiting magician.

Blackstair­s Community Playschool are now accepting enrolments for September for ECCE scheme and non ECCE scheme children. Please contact Catherine between 9.15 a.m. and 1.15 p.m. Monday to Friday at 053 9256960 or 087 0923441. If you are aware of any children who wish to enrol please advise them to drop in any morning to see Catherine or ring the number above.

The staff and committee would like to thank all for their support throughout the past year and wish all children leaving the playschool every success in Primary School and look forward to seeing the younger children returning on August 30 when the playschool re-opens. Enjoy the summer holidays.

THE DUFFRY SOCIAL CLUB

Thirty four members of the Duffry Social Club had a most enjoyable day out in Carlow on Thursday last week.

Their first stop was at the beautiful Arboretum Lifestyle and Garden Centre in Leighlinbr­idge, then on to Carlow Cathedral and a very interestin­g tour of St Patrick’s College one of Ireland’s most historic and educationa­l institutio­ns founded in 1782, which was a seminary up till 1990 and now a college of humanities for lay people with some 700 students. A college where some notable bishops and professors were educated, the extensive building now also houses a state of the art library and the George Bernard Shaw Theatre.

The group finished their day with a lovely dinner in the Dolmen Hotel.

SPLIT THE POT

Winner of Kiltealy NS split-thepot last week was Emma Murphy €183. Split the pot will continue through the summer as it is an important income for the school. Envelopes and results will be available in local businesses as usual. Thank you for your continued support.

DUFFRY ROVERS LOTTO

The numbers drawn last week were 12, 27, 29 and 30. No jackpot winner and one player matched three and won €150, Doug Watchorn, Boolamore. Sellers prizes went to Tom Pender, Matthew Cooper, Larry Breen and Ailish Atkinson. The draw tonight (Tuesday, July 5) is in the Holy Grail and the jackpot is €6,700.

IMPORTANT MEETINGS

There will be a meeting of Kiltealy Hall committee on Monday, July 11, at 7.30 p.m.

There will be a meeting to organise Kiltealy field day also on Monday, July 11, at 8.30 p.m. Both meetings will be in Kiltealy Hall. All most welcome.

SOCIAL DANCING

Social dancing in Rathanna Hall on Sunday, July 10, with music by Billy Kirwan. Admission €8, usual refreshmen­ts served.
