COMMUNITY GAMES

The County Finals in Ardattin on Saturday and Sunday, June 18 and 19, proved to be a fantastic success for our area. The morning started off on a very high note with the club being awarded first place in the parade. Well done to the Parade Organisers Laura Murphy and Orna Brophy. These two young girls have helped our club in so many ways during the year. Thank you to the parents who contributed towards the parade and a special word of thanks to the pupils and teachers of Kildavin NS for making the torches.

All our Under-6’s and 8’s were in action on Saturday morning and a number of them proceeded to semi-finals on Sunday morning and then to finals on Sunday afternoon. To see so many young children from our area taking part and performing to the best of their ability was very rewarding for the coaches.

On Saturday afternoon our under-10s and 12’s were in action and again everyone performed to the best of their ability. Their hard work during training for the past number of months was very evident with large number advancing to semi-finals and finals. Also on Saturday our members took part in cycling on grass, long jump and turbo javelin. The club achieved great success in all these areas.

Sunday was a damp day to say the least but again the young athletes performed in their semi-finals with a large number reaching the finals which took place on Sunday afternoon. The competition for the mixed distance relays were held on Tuesday the 21st in Ardattin. A large number of our members made the panel for these relays and will be representing the county in Athlone in August.

The young people who joined our club this year as helpers provided huge backup to the coaches. We want to thank Orna Brophy, Laura Murphy, Barry Hickey, Riona Byrne and Stephen Carroll. Barry and Riona were unable to attend the County Finals but their commitment to club during the year is much appreciated.

Orna, Laura and Stephen worked so hard over the weekend, your help and willingness to do all you were asked was of huge benefit and helped enormously to the smooth running of finals. Two of our young competitors were injured over the course of the weekend and we are very happy to say that both have made a full recovery.
