PATRON/FIELD DAY

On Sunday, June 26, the annual Patron was held in St Cormac’s followed by a field day organised by the Parish Committee. Fr Tom Doyle, retired PP of Craanford assisted Fr Gahan at the Patron. The weather was overcast but thankfully the rain held off.

It was remarked that ‘ Men were scarce.’ as Ireland was playing France in soccer but despite this, over €9,000 was made on the day. Slightly over €2,000 was collected for the upkeep of the cemetery, a little more than €2,500 was made on the ‘ Big Draw’ and well over €4,000 was made at the field day itself.

Fr Gahan gave a comprehens­ive breakdown of the money collected in the newsletter at weekend Masses. Lelia Breen won the mobile phone in that raffle while in the hamper draw, Mary and Ollie Gahan took the €100 voucher top prize with Mary O’Connor winning the €50 voucher second prize. Paddy Walsh, a noted connoisseu­r of confection, won the ‘Guess the weight of the Cake’ competitio­n with Cathy Coughlan winning the raffle for the trailer of firewood. First prize in the ‘Big Draw’, €150 in cash was won by Thomas Keating, second prize, €100 was won by Marie Barron, third prize, €50 went to Claire Smith, fourth prize, €25 was won by Jame Roben and the last prize, also €25 was won by John and Catherine Fenlon.

SUMMER DANCE CAMPS

The Deirdre Furlong Scoil Rince is organising summer camps again this summer. The first will be held in the Community Centre in Ferns from July 18 to July 22. The classes will run from 10.30 a.m. till 2 p.m. A second camp, running from July 25 to July 29 will be held in Harney’s, Ballyedmon­d.

The camp will include solo dances, céilí and figure dances as well as arts and crafts. The camps cost €50 per child and €40 each for two children from the same family. For more details, please contact Deirdre at 087 6487684.

GAA NEWS

On Sunday last, July 3, the under-10 boys played Naomh Éanna of Gorey and fielded two teams, and under-10 and an under-nine team, and played exceedingl­y well. For the under-10s, Michael Kehoe scored two fine goals and Patrick Kinsella starred in defence. Conor Burke and James Cunniffe were the stars for the U-9s.

The under-eight players would like to thank all those who supported their ‘Guess the score’ fundraiser and their ‘barbecue Breakfast’ on Sunday morning. Three people, Liam Cooney, Josh Larkin and Mary Byrne were nearest the final score and won €30 each.

GAA LOTTO

Tonight, Tuesday, July 5, at 9.30 p.m., the draw for the €7,000 Monageer-Boolavogue GAA lotto jackpot will be held in the New Clubhouse. The numbers drawn last time were 9, 13, 19 and 26. No lucky punter had all four numbers but Ann Marie O’Neill had three of them and scooped the €160 match-three prize. If you haven’t bought your ticket yet, they can be purchased in the clubhouse immediatel­y before the draw.

CONGRATULA­TIONS.

Well done to Cllr Pip Breen, scion of the Breen family of Knockavocc­a, who was elected Cathaoirle­ach of the Gorey Municipal District at the committee’s AGM recently. He was elected a to the first ever Gorey Municipal District Council on his first attempt. He began his career in public life when he joined the Fianna Fáil cumann in Boolavogue in 1969 and has served in farming and sporting organisati­ons for over 40 years.

SOCCER AGM

The AGM of St Cormac’s AFC will be held in the clubhouse on Monday, July 18, at 8 p.m. Nomination­s for the commitee, positions on the coaching staff or motions for the AGM should be forwarded to the club Chairperso­n, Phil Christophi at 087 6852439.

CÚL CAMPS BOOKING

The Cúl Camp in Monageer will run from August 8 to August 12 and will cater for Gaelic football, hurling and camogie. The cost for is €55 for the first child in a family, €45 for the second child booked and €40 each for third and fourth children. SOCCER SUMMER CAMP

St Cormac’s AFC are hosting an FAI soccer camp and this will run from the 11th till the 15th. of July. The cost for the five days is only €65 and places can be booked online at summersocc­erschools.ie.

MINISTERS OF THE WORD

The Ministers of the Word on duty next weekend in St Cormac’s are Aodhagán Swords at the Vigil Mass on Saturday night and Ann O’Sullivan at the 11 a.m. Mass in Sunday, July 10. On Saturday evening, July 9, Geraldine Doyle is the Eucharisti­c minister on duty while Catherine Gahan will help distribute Holy Communion on Sunday morning.

RURAL SOCIAL SCHEME

Fiona Byrne who helps organise RSS schemes in Co. Wexford is currently updating their list of community organisati­ons which wish to avail of the RSS employment scheme. Any group or voluntary organisati­on interested in availing of the scheme is asked to contact Fiona at 087 0572951 or 053 9155864. These organisati­ons help with village and community enhancemen­t, social care of the elderly, care for pre-school and after-school groups, environmen­tal work, maintenanc­e of community and sporting facilities and energy conservati­on work for the elderly and less well off, as well as other iniatives. The RSS workers can be employed for 19.5 hours a week.

FR MURPHY CENTRE

The Fr Murphy Centre is open seven days a week for the summer, from 10.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday to Saturday and from 11.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. With lovely displays of flowers and a hearty welcome, make sure to call in sometime this summer and enjoy the peace and tranquilit­y.

‘PIG ON A SPIT’ NIGHT

Wexford Surf Lifesaving Club will be holding a Pig on a Spit Night at Gorey Rugby Club on Saturday, July 16. There will be a DJ from 9.30 p.m. till late (over16s only – children welcome till 9.30 p.m.).

Admission is €15 per adult and €5 for children. All money raised on the day will go towards sending the Wexford Water Safety/ Surf Lifesaving team to the World Championsh­ips in Holland in September.

COURTOWN 4K SWIM

The Courtown to Ballymoney 4k Swim takes place on July 24, starting at Courtown RNLI Station swimming north along the coast to the finishing point at Ballymoney North Beach. Starting at 11 a.m., the maximum swim time expected is 2.5 hours. All money raised on the day will go towards sending the Wexford Water Safety/Surf Lifesaving team to the World Championsh­ips in Holland in September.
