Exhibition­s, photograph­y, art, crafts and music give festival a cultural edge

RUNNING alongside the main events at the Gorey Market House Festival are a series of cultural events and exhibition­s.

On Thursday, July 28, the festival’s main exhibition, ‘Locorum’, will open at Gorey Library at 7 p.m. It features works by five distinctiv­e local artists: Amanda Doran; Patrick Redmond; Stephen Nolan; Mary Claire Kehoe; and Martin Redmond. The evening will also include a set dance céilí at the Civic Centre with music by local Cuisle Cheoil musicians. Local Irish dancing schools will perform.

On Friday, July 29, Beat 102103’s ‘Beat on The Street’ will broadcast from Gorey from lunchtime. At the same time, the BAD festival will kick off in Gorey Town Park. Running from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. This alcohol-free teen event is supported by Gorey Municipal District and organised by young people.

At Gorey School of Art, ‘Peripherie­s’ will showcase the work of leading practition­ers.

Gorey Photograph­y Society will stage an exhibition in Gorey Library of recent work which gives an insight to the towns and its people.

Gorey Creative Fair will run at Gorey Shopping Centre will run at Gorey Shopping Centre on Saturday and Sunday, July 30 and 31, from 10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. showcasing handmade crafts at more than 35 stands.

Gorey Art Circle’s 39th annual exhibition will run in the Market House, from Saturday, July 27, to Sunday, August 11. It is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Flashback Gorey will feature a black and white photograph­ic exhibition from the Denis O’Connor archives.

The Gorey Heritage Trail Experience will provide access to key heritage sites during the festival. Get a map in the tourist office or library.
