Busy schedule for Enniscorthy’s re-enactors
THIS SUNDAY, July 24, Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society has been invited to be part of an event that never happened. In 1916, Kilkenny Volunteers were to meet up with fellow rebels from Wexford and Waterford at Sculloge Gap and then head to Dublin to join the Rising but because of confusion about orders it never happened.
Now 100 years later it is going to be recreated and we are calling on people from all of the areas to come out and join us for any part of this 26-mile trip. There will be plenty of backup and a lift home for those who need it.
The August bank holiday weekend our Re-enactors will be on the streets of Enniscorthy for the Living History element of our Rockin Food Festival. We will be available to answer questions and have photographs taken and be on hand for visitor and local alike adding colour and pageantry to the Festival weekend.
Also on the Bank Holiday weekend some of our members have been invited to Mayo to be part of their re-enactment In Humberts Footsteps which will include military camps, skirmishes, French soldiers, redcoats, pikemen and pikewomen and, yes, the French are coming: ‘ The French are on the Say and will be here without delay.’
Chief organiser Stephen Dunford has traced a descendant of General Humbert, who will perform the re-dedication of Humberts Stone at a ceremony at Kilcummin, and Enniscorthy re-enactors will be there representing the Enniscorthy and Wexford connection.
Just some of the activities in the pipeline for our members in the coming two weeks bringing Enniscorthy and our heritage and history to all.
