The winner, who is better known for his exploits in squash having represented Ireland on numerous occasions, was Dave McCabe (17). Dave was not in a great position after nine holes, recording only 17 points, but against the wind he played a great back nine.

Despite a blow out at the 12th, he had 20 points and won on the breakdown from Mark Mullen (scr.). Mark had five birdies and two double bogeys for a great one under par round.

ROSSLARELADIES

Well, we are now in the height of our golfing season and on Saturday we had our lady Captain’s (Catherine Howard) prize to the ladies. The weather may have been a little dull but nothing else was about the day.

It started off with Catherine, and her handsome husband, John, greeting us on our way out to play. He took photos of us all with Catherine. We all thought this was going to be a lovely momento for Catherine to have of her day, but a photo was waiting for each of us by the time we went to dinner that night! How nice, and the photo was dated also!

So the golf was windy and the wild flowers in the rough were as colourful and beautiful as Catherine herself. She beamed all day and radiated her friendly personality to all. The cards and presents were stacked high in the clubhouse for her which shows how popular she is with everyone.

Then we had a very tasty dinner followed by presentation of prizes. Caroline Archer (15) came first with a great 70 points. She was thrilled with the beautiful jewellery presented to her and said how this was third time lucky as she had come second twice before. Well done Caroline. There were lots of other happy winners (please see the results below).

After dinner there was more entertainment...and this was hilarious. Catherine herself is a retired midwife so some of the members did a skit on three pregnant women in the hospital waiting room and then giving birth.

The babies and their mothers weren’t fit to be photographed for all you readers, so I will have to leave it all to your imagination. We all rolled around laughing.

After that Emma Hore sang beautifully accompanied by Cian McGovern. This was followed by our lady Captain, Catherine, and then winner, Caroline, singing. With that, we couldn’t stop the rest of the audience grabbing the mic for their go, so all in all it was a fab day and night.

Also we have to wish Joan Breen a happy 90th birthday on the same day, Saturday. Joan drives herself down from Enniscorthy every Tuesday and plays with her pals, Nora Fleming and Yvonne Barnes.

There is no stopping them, and if the main course is too booked up around 2 p.m. they go to The Burrow. But at 90 Joan is still pulling her trolley around the fairways. There was no electric when she started out, so why give in now?

On Tuesday there was an invitational fourball sponsored by Kerlogue Nursing Home, and €1,678 was raised and presented to Windmill Therapeutic Centre.

There was a great crowd at the club in the evening, and Joan from the centre spoke of the wonderful work they do in our community. These local charities really need our support.

Monday, July 25, is start of ladies’ open week. French Connection, Caterhire Ltd., Murphy’s SuperValu, Club House Caterers and Barkers are all sponsoring days. Please see the website for details.
