Motorist who lied on insurance form fails to get licence back

-

AN effort by Myles Dundon of 18 Glenbeg Point, Courtown to have a driving ban lifted failed after Judge Gerard Haughton ruled that he had lied in filling out a form when seeking a quote for insurance cover.

Dundon was at the District Court in Gorey to give his evidence in support of his application for the early restoration of his licence lost when he was disqualified for seven years in 2011.

He explained that he was a father of five children, soon to be six, and that he had problems in the past with drug addiction.

He had obtained a €4,600 quote for cover as he had a chance of obtaining work said his parents were prepared to assist him in finding the money.

He undertook never to commit any crime as he wanted to contribute to society.

However, this did not satisfy Garda Sergeant Victor Isdell who pointed out that Dundon already faced a bill for €1,700 in compensation to injured parties after a series of 15 thefts from cars.

The sergeant pointed out to a list of six previous convictions for motor insurance offences imposed over the period from 2008 to 2010.

The judge noted that, when he applied to the insurance company, the applicant only disclosed one such previous conviction.

Dundon stated on the form that he was fined €500 for this offence when in fact he was handed a jail term.

The application was refused.
