South East League - Enniscorthy RFC 16, Gorey 17 - Enniscorthy suffered a narrow defeat against Gorey last Saturday evening at the Ross Road. They led 16–10 as they entered the final minutes of the game but a late try and conversion undid them at the finish.

This was a useful workout for both sides ahead of the Leinster League in two weeks time. Enniscorthy, playing into a strong wind, trailed by 10-7 at half-time. Centre Daniel Pim scored a try under the posts which Ivan Poole converted. The visitors struck first with a long range penalty and they scored an excellent try to take the lead after 30 minutes.

In the second half with the wind Enniscorthy has much more of the possession and territory but Gorey emerged as winners. Ivan Poole kicked three penalties but they could not break the visitors defence to nail down the victory. Gorey took one of their few chances in the second half to score near the end. Their full-back converted to seal victory.

The good news for Enniscorthy was that their seconds won well and the newcomers to the first squad all performed well. Tony White was the pick of them, he had a fine game at tight head prop.

Next Saturday Enniscorthy play Wicklow away in last season’s south east final.
