NEWROSSSENIORS

We hosted the second last Autumn Seniors Alliance outing of the season on Monday last when there was a magnificent turnout of 113 players. With the course in tiptop condition and the weather most favourable scoring was very good.

There was a grand total of €500 in prizes up for grabs and competition for a share of them was ultra-keen.

Only points separated the overall winners and those in the three categories showing how close the results turned out to be.

In first place overall was Frank O Connor (21) from the Gold Coast Club with a great score of 42 points. Placed second overall was Sean English (20) from Dungarvan whose 41 points was good enough to claim the runners-up spot

In Category (A) 0-14 Handicap, Michael Wall (14) from Waterford was best with 36 points closely followed by Bill Bergin (14) from Clonmel and Tony Harford New Ross (13) on 35 and 34 points respectively.

In Category (B) 15-19 Handicap, Denis O Brien (18) from Dungarvan took the number one spot with another good score of 40 points. Placed second in this category with 38 points was Robert Hyde (19) also from the Dungarvan club. James Wellwood (15) from Callan took the third spot here with 37 points.

Category (C) 20 plus Handicap, saw our own Larry Shannon (21) bring in a great score of 40 points to eadily take the spoils here. John Greene (28) from Waterford was second with 37 points after a count back with third placed Denis O Sullivan (27) from Callan also scoring 37 points.

The organisers of the Autumn Seniors wishes to thank New Ross for the efficient way that the competition was run by starters, John and Jamesie Murphy who got the 113 players away on time even though some of them were not on the original time sheet. They also send their gratitude to manager Joe Foran, who had the tea and coffee brewing from early morning and the restaurant and bar staff for their efficient service during the day-it was much appreciated by all our outside visitors.

The final outing of the season for the Alliance takes place at Dungarvan (Knocknagranagh) on Monday the 12th of September. There are only a couple of vacancies on the New Ross time sheet so anyone wishing to travel contact Jamesie Murphy immediately on 051-421151, Mobile 085-1846172 or email jamesiemurphy@gmail.com<mailto:jamesiemurphy@gmail.com> to book your spot.

We have no team game on September 15 as it is the club open singles but we are back on the 22nd as per normal.

ROSSLARE LADIES

Tuesday’s golf was a charity day in aid of National Breast Cancer Research Ireland. 72 ladies played and many ladies wore pink as a token of their support for the charity. There was also a raffle to further add to the charity’s funds. Josephine Moran won the competition, generously sponsored by Marie Therese Swan, and was therefore also winner of the Memorial Cup this year as that competition also ran on Tuesday concurrently.

This weekend the club is running their Pro-Am in conjunction with Kelly’s Hotel, supporting St Patrick’s Special Needs School and Wexford Hospice Homecare. So far it is looking like a great success with all slots for teams filled.

The ladies committee have sponsored a team to enter. The qualifiing team was picked from the best scores over four weeks of singles competitions. Marianne Brennan, Siobhan Redmond and Anne Redmond were the top scorers.

Unfortunately Anne Redmond is unable to play and will be replaced by Phyllis O’Farrell. We hope they have a great day and get plenty of tips off their Professional going around. We would like to welcome all the Professionals and visitors and hope they enjoy the day. The prize fund for the PGA Professionals is €10,000 and if any get lucky with a hole-in-one they can win a car. So all looking good! Spectators also welcome.

On the Friday evening there is a golf clinic at 6pm with Damian McGrane and Hazel Kavanagh on the first tee. This is followed by dinner in Kelly’s Hotel with another interactive Q&A session with the two legends. This should prove to be a night’s entertainment with a difference and also gives the audience exclusive insights into their careers and the ups and downs of being on tour. There may be a few tickets still available for €45 for those interested.

We would like to wish the ladies and their caddies well who have entered the Irish Senior Womens Open Strokeplay in Arklow Golf Club this Wednesday and Thursday. We had a great experience hosting it this time last year and the occassion really boosted the confidence of some of our players who entered. Tuesday, September 13 is a Ladies V Par competition. ROSSLARE

Having won the area final some weeks ago our Senior cup team made its exit from the competition, losing to Portmarnock in the Leinster semi-final in Laytown/Bettystown on Saturday last.

In the morning match Rosslare had a very narrow win over Druids Heath. John Brady and Ian Lynch had good solid wins with the other three matches very close. Tony O’Leary lost on the 17th and Gary Collins was level after 19 holes.

In the crucial match Mark Mullen came from two down to win with a birdie on the 19th. In the afternoon Paul Murphy replaced Ian Lynch and proceeded former South of Ireland Champion John Greene on the 15th.

In the second game, John Brady, who was three down after nine holes, played a great back nine to win on the 18th. Unfortunately, our other players all went down, two of them on the 17th. Brendan Rossiter was also on the panel.

Well done to the players and to Managers Liam MacNamara and his assistant John McDonald.

Two of the panel Paul Murphy and John Brady put up good performances in two separate events. In the Irish Youth Amateur Open Championship in Galway Golf Club, Paul, after a poor first round of 75, shot 70, 71 to finish joint sixth. He shared this position with Ted Collins, a former Fred Daly player with Rosslare.

Immediately after the Senior Cup, John Brady flew out to Italy to take part in the Italian Open. He was one of three Irish players invited. He had a poor first round of 6 over par 78 but then shot 72 and 70. In the final round he unfortunately had an 81 but still finished 25th in a very select field.

Saturday, August 27 – Fourball - 1st: Dan Cash (8) and Ciaran Cash (9) 45 points; 2nd: Dermot Hall (11) and John Roche (15) 43 points; 3rd: John Barron (8) and Kevin Foran (14) 42 points (B9).

On Saturday next the club hosts its first Pro-Am in a long number of years. 48 professionals from throughout the country compete. There is shotgun start at 8am and a second one at 2pm. Everyone is invited to come and watch some great golf.

NEW ROSS MEN

It’s said that winning a title in one thing but defending it is a whole different story. Ivan Croke (12) pulled off the feat last weekend as he won the Prim-Ed Publishing sponsored Club Cup for the second year in a row.

The Club Cup dates back to the 1930s and has been played over a very demanding 36 hole strokeplay for many years. This makes Ivan’s achievement all the more laudable.

Ivan opened up with a cracking 63 nett, to be tied for the lead after round 1 with John O’Connor (9) and two ahead of Eamonn Wall (9).

A second round 71 was enough to see Ivan finish two shots clear of Leo Carroll (11) who was a model of consistency, carding two 68s for a 136 total.

John O’Connor had to make do with third spot, also on 136, whilst Jack Ryan returned to form to take home the gross with a 149 total.

The categories were won by Junior Cashin (5, 139), Joe Kelly (11, 142) and Jim Foran (21, 140). Eamonn Wall won the first 18 with Denis Kennedy (14) taking home the second 18 prize with a 66. Thank you to Seamus and Pauline McGuinness of Prim-Ed Publishing for their continued and generous support

In last week’s Tuesday Fourball it was Eamonn Wall (9) and Frank Cullen (18) who took the spoils with a very good 37 points edging out Category A winners’ Eamon Delaney (15) and Peter Kehoe (13) on the last 9.

The other category was won by Richie Aylward (18) and MJ Cullen (18) on 36 points. The competition was generously sponsored by Eamon Kissane of Total PC.

There is no Tuesday Fourball this week as the course is closed for sanding of fairways and hollow tining of the greens.

Members can return to action next weekend when a 18 hole Club Singles sponsored by Max Power takes place.

Best wishes to John O’Connor and James Roche (Club Professional) who represent New Ross in the regional PGA Tankard event in Carlow this week.

The 3Ts team, led out by our other Club Professional, Paul Morris, are also in action this week. They take part in the Regional Qualifying event at Dundrum House in Co Tipperary.

WEX FORD

Wednesday’s open singles competition was run in in support of the 3Ts suicide charity. The winner goes through to a regional qualifier, with the final in the K Club Ryder cup course in October.

Results were first Tommy Byrne (19) 42 points, with Brendan Martin (21) second with 40 points on the back 9 from David Curtin (16) also on 40 points.

The gross was won by Denis Lehane with 29 points, while David Hogan (21) from Kilcock won the visitors with 38 points. David Curtin goes through to the 3Ts regional qualifier. Fridays 3 person Waltz was won by Ted Mangan (15), P. C. Browne (19) and Pat Moorehouse (17) with 69 points.

The weekend competition was sponsored by the Yard Restaurant. The weather was the winner on Saturday with only a handful of intrepid souls venturing out. The fine weather on Sunday ensured a full time sheet, with our veteran members to the fore again for the second week in a row.

The winners were: 1st: Michael Browne (17) 40 points (B6); second: Lar Kenny (28) 40 points (B6); 3rd: Pat Ennis (11) 40 points; Gross: Mark Mullen 38 points; 4th: Billy Roche (23) 39 points (B9); Vets: Desmond Farrell
