“But what about your warning?” We hear you ask. Well, up until recently most iPads were constructed in a similar manner. This meant that we could separate the iPad’s glass from it’s LCD and fit a new glass touchscreen. The latest iPad from Apple sees a different construction approach, the iPad Air 2 (or 2nd Generation) is the first iPad to come with it’s glass screen physically bonded to the LCD, this means that no separation is possible and if the glass breaks then the glass and LCD must be replaced as one whole unit. This drives the cost of the part up dramatically and likewise the cost of the repair goes up.

At the time of writing, an iPad 2, 3, or 4 would cost only €60 to repair it’s glass touchscreen and the iPad Mini and iPad Air 1st gen would cost only €80. The cost of replacing the iPad Air 2nd Gen’s screen will be more than double that (currently around €220). This gives both parents and schools a lot to think about when purchasing iPads for students. If you wanted our advice, we would tell you to go for an iPad 4 or an iPad Air 1st Generation as the cost of repairs is still relatively affordable and there’s nothing that those models won’t be able to do that the Air 2nd Generation will.
