Nickey Rackard’s hurl is up for auction:

‘CUCHULAINN’S Son’s Hurley,’ which is reputed to have been one of the hurls used by Wexford GAA Legend Nickey Rackard during the 1955 All Ireland Final, is coming up for sale at an auction specialisi­ng in GAA memorabili­a in Kilkenny on Wednesday, September 28.

The hurl is considered a unique memento from a historic day for both Wexford and Irish GAA, belonging to one of the greatest ever players and is estimated at between €350 and €500.

It is one of more than 800 lots coming up at the Fonsie Mealy Auction due to take place in The Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel, Ormonde Street, Kilkenny, at 10.30 a.m. on September 28.

The auction consists of a collection of rare and historic GAA and sporting memorabili­a, as well as other interestin­g collectors and literary items.

In the grand tradition of GAA memorabili­a from Ireland’s most renowned sporting legends, the auction includes a wealth of hurling medals, 21 in total, belonging to Tipperary and Dublin midfielder Philip Shanahan. Remembered as one of hurling’s finest midfielder­s, Philip Shanahan’s collection consists of a number of medals documentin­g his successful career. Medals included are The All Ireland Medal Group (three in a row-Tipperary), The Railway Cup Medal Group (four in a row for the Munster Province) and other related medals (est. €20,000- €30,000).

The sale also includes a number of sporting programmes for sale is a rare soccer programme from ‘ The day Nazi Germany played Ireland’ in October 1936 which saw Ireland play Germany in Dalymount Park (est. €300 - €400). There are also many scarce GAA programmes for sale spanning five decades.
