ST. HELEN’S

The final Seniors’ open of the season attracted a big entry. Generously sponsored by the Kilrane Inn, the competition was fierce.

The ‘young fellows’ in the 50 to 65 age group produced a tight finish with Peter just getting the better of John on the back nine. In the over-66 section, the leading Old Timer proved to be Terry, with a fine score of 42 points. The best of luck with your new 18 handicap.

We welcomed our friends from Foxrock Golf Club on Saturday for the Clare Redmond Trophy. Well done to the two Brians and Brona. In the team event, Foxrock retained the trophy with a narrow win over an unlucky home side of Aidan Colgan, Terry O’Toole, Pat Murphy and Gerry Byrne.

A huge thank you to everybody who supported our very enjoyable table quiz last Tuesday, with the funds raised going towards defraying the cost of our panels going to the All-Irelands.

The Junior Cup are playing Belvoir Park on Thursday at 12 noon followed by the Challenge Cup who are playing the winners of Headfort/Co. Sligo on Friday at 11.15 a.m. Supporters are both welcome and appreciated.

Thanks also to all who supported the coffee morning in aid of Hospice last Thursday. We raised €359 for this very worthy cause.

ROSSLARE

For the first time in almost 20 years, Rosslare hosted a very successful Pro-Am on Saturday. A total of 48 professionals from throughout the country competed.

There were two shotgun starts - one at 8 a.m. and one at 2 p.m. - with 24 teams in each draw. The course was in immaculate condition and received high praise from professionals and amateurs alike.

The winner of the pro event with a great score of five under 67 was David Barry (Douglas). He had two shots to spare over a group of three - Colm Moriarty (Drive Golf), former Wexford pro, Damien McGrane, and Mark Murphy who, until last October, was assistant pro in Rosslare.

On two under par 70 were David Higgins (Waterville), Kenny Fahey (G.U.I. National Academy), David Ryan (Cahir Park) and Brian Walton (Island).

Team event: 1, Tim Rice (Limerick), Tom Barrett, Paul Barrett, Adrian Usher, 94 points; 2, David Higgins (Waterville), Bill Connolly, Billy Fanning, Rich Howlin, 92 points; 3, Mark Whelan (Castlewarden), John Barron, Ray Quin, Kevin Foran; 4, David Foley (Dromoland Castle), John Diviney, Tom Close, Michael Horgan; 5, Kenny Fahey (G.U.I. On Friday evening, despite heavy rain, a big crowd attended a clinic given by Damien McGrane and Hazel Kavanagh, former tour player on the European Ladies’ Tour. They were also guest speakers at a dinner in Kelly’s Resort Hotel, the main sponsors of the Pro-Am.

The main benefactors from the Pro-Am were St. Patrick’s Special School and Wexford Hospice Homecare.

The committee were very pleased with the success of the day and would like to thank everyone who helped make it so successful. A special thanks to the main sponsor, Bill Kelly of Kelly’s Resort Hotel, everyone who sponsored teams and tee boxes, and all who contributed in any way to make it such a success.

ROSSLARELADIES

On Tuesday we played a v. par competition. This is a game of no mercy - you must hit to your own par on the course or you get a negative score, and then move on quickly to the next hole.

Each hole is over before you know it, with no chance even to practise your putting as in strokes. They say it is very good for your game though, so out we went and the weather was lovely.

Carmel Quinlivan was the winner and well done to her as she is a very steady player and this is a must for v. par.

The previous weekend we had our Pro-Am which everyone felt was a great success. The weekend was sponsored by Kelly’s Hotel who hosted a fabulous meal on Friday night, and the clinic with Damien McGrane and Hazel Kavanagh was both witty and informative despite terrible weather.

However, the sun shone all day Saturday, as 24 teams hit off at 8 a.m. and the second 24 teams hit off at 2 pm.. The team which won the sponsorship by the ladies’ committee - Marianne Brennan, Siobhán Redmond and Phyllis O’Farrell - won the ladies’ team prize with 89 points, playing with pro Michael O’Shea from Rathsallagh.

The other good news was that a cheque for €5,000 each was presented to the two charities – St. Patrick’s Special Needs School in Enniscorthy and Wexford Hospice Homecare. We would like to thank all our lady members who helped with registration, car-parking, ferrying to holes, ball spotting and many other individuals who made the event run smoothly.

Thursday sees the return of the Seniors’ morning golf for over-50s. Tuesday, September 27, is a singles stableford competition.

Tuesday, September 13, singles v. par (C.S.S. 74): 1, Carmel Quinlivan (21), four up; 2, Gerarde Mahon (19), two up; gross, Doreen McGovern (11), ten down (back nine); 3, Eleanor O’Connor (21), one up (back nine); 4, Norrie Goff (21), one up; Seniors, Eileen Doyle (21), all square.
