SPIEGELTEN­T FESTIVAL IS KICKING OFF!

A fantastic line-up ahead as 17 days of entertainm­ent begin this Friday

ROLL UP, roll up! The fifth Wexford Spiegelten­t Festival brings 17 days and nights of entertainm­ent and spectacle to the quayfront from Friday.

The 1920s Paradiso Spiegelten­t has been erected and a host of performers – from eighties icon Paul Young to current favs Little Green Cars and The Riptide Movement – are ready to perform in the unique venue, full of ‘old world’ atmosphere.

Irish songwriter and firm Wexford favourite Mick Flannery gets this year’s festival under way from 7 p.m. on Friday night, followed at 10 p.m. by The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a reenactmen­t of the classic cult film which starred Susan Sarandon, Tim Curry and Meat Loaf.

There’s something for young and old on Saturday with OTT Wrestling for all ages at 1 p.m. and an over-18s version at 7 p.m.

Then it’s back to the music when festival regular Jack L, who was recently awarded ‘Pick of the Fringe’ at the Hollywood Fringe Festival Awards, takes the stage at 10 p.m.

The Sunday highlight is Paul Young in concert at 8 p.m. It will be a real nostalgia trip for fans of the eighties heartthrob who who has recently released his newest album ‘Good Thing’.

Wexford’s own WOLFF performs at 8 p.m. on Tuesday next, with more local stars – Corner Boy and Hermitage Green – in the Spiegelten­t 24 hours later,

Other music highpoints over the course of the 17 days of the festival include:

Christy Moore (Tuesday, 25 and Thursday, 27), the legendary Irish folk singer, songwriter and guitarist with many years on the road and many hits under his belt,

The Riptide Movement (Sunday, 30), the Dublin rock band formed in 2006 who hit the charts with their song ‘All Works Out’ featuring Amy Huberman in the music video.

Ralph McTell (Saturday 19), an influentia­l figure in the 1960’s English folk music scene, best known for ‘Streets Of London’.

Little Green Cars (Friday, 28), the Indie rock band with a unique produced songs which convey a myriad of emotion

Mike Denver Thursday, 20), Ireland’s most popular country singer recently awarded ‘Entertaine­r of the Year’ and ‘Album of the Year’ for ‘Cut Loose’ at the Irish Country Music Awards 2016

Something Happens (Saturday, 22), the Irish pop-rock band much loved in the late 80s and early 90s. Fronted by Newstalk’s Tom Dunne, they scored such classic hits as ‘Parachute’ and ‘Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello (Petrol)’.

The 4 of Us (playing on the bill with Something Happens), the multi-award-winning Irish band who have seven albums under their belt and a back catalogue of memorable songs like their smash hit ‘Mary’.

Comedy content includes the great Tommy Tiernan with his ‘Under The Influence’ show on Saturday, 22, Milton Jones ( Wednesday, 26), is a Mock of the Week regular notorious for his deadpan delivery of puns and deadly one-liners and, on the same bill, Foil, Arms & Hog provide world class entertainm­ent with their perfectly timed scripted comedy. Meanwhile, the incomparab­le Al Porter brings his all new show ‘Al Porter At Large’ to this year’s Spiegelten­t on Thursday, 20.
