Six in the mix for All Stars selection

WITH DAVY Fitzgerald being the main topic of conversation among the Wexford sporting public, it shouldn’t be forgotten that six of our brightest talents in hurling and camogie were rewarded with selection on their respective All Star shortlists last week.

The hurlers were ultimately disappointed to exit the championship at the hands of Waterford, but that first victory over Cork since 1956 was still a stand-out moment of the summer.

And the efforts of the players have been duly recognised as team captain Matthew O’Hanlon is among the nominees in defence, while Lee Chin is also in the mix for a place in the attack.

Turning to camogie, Cork ended our interest after extra-time in the semi-final in Thurles which was a graveyard for our ambitions this year.

Happily, four players have been nominated for the All Stars though, the St. Martin’s duo of goalkeeper Mags D’Arcy and debutant defender Sarah O’Connor, Oulart-The Ballagh midfielder Shelley Kehoe, and veteran attacker Kate Kelly whose proficiency from frees made her the championship’s top scorer.

There is particular excitement at the inclusion of O’Connor, still a student in the Loreto Secondary School and a player destined to have a very bright future.

We recall that a past pupil of the Spawell Road establishment, Katrina Parrock, was just a few months past her 16th birthday when she received her first All Star nomination after her own debut year as a Wexford Senior in 2006.
