Hectic Coiste season drawing to a conclusion
NAOMH EANNA were among the winners in the People Newspapers Coiste na nÓg championships last week as the under-age season moved towards a conclusion.
The Gorey boys won the New Ross Standard Under-14 Division 1 football crown against St. Martin’s and a full report, as well as those on other finals, is included elsewhere.
There was quarter- and semi-final action during last week too. Sarsfields won through to the Gorey Guardian Juvenile football Roinn 1 championship semi-final with a high-scoring win (1-18 to 2-8) in a fine performance against Shelmaliers on Tuesday.
Their semi-final is scheduled for tonight (Tuesday), with Sars and their Wexford town opposition St. Mary’s (Maudlintown) being dragged to St. Patrick’s Park (8.15 p.m.) for their last four clash. One point separated the sides in the group stages so it should be a superb clash.
The other semi-final in the Roinn 1 championship takes place on Saturday (St. Patrick’s Park, 11 a.m.) and pits HWH-Bunclody with Blackwater. The former won the earlier clash between the two, on their way to a perfect seven wins in the group stages, but that was way back in April.
St. Anne’s played Kilrush in the Roinn 1 shield semi-final last night (Monday), with the winners set to meet an Our Lady’s Island/St. Fintan’s side which hasn’t played a competitive football game since August 1. That final will be played in St. Patrick’s Park on Friday (6.45 p.m.).
The Enniscorthy Juvenile hurling Roinn 1 championship semi-finals took place last weekend. All four teams in the last four came out of Group B and there was no surprise with the top two, Rathnure and Blackwater, taking wins over Rathgarogue-Cushinstown and Shelmaliers respectively, advancing to the final. A date for the decider has not yet been set.
There are two finals in the Wexford People Minor football championships this weekend. The Premier shield pits Dunbrody Gaels with Shelmaliers (Oylegate, Saturday, 11 a.m.). Both sides received byes to the decider after losing in the quarter-finals of the Premier championship.
In the Roinn 1 shield, Hollow Rovers will play Rathgarogue-Cushinstown on Friday in St. Patrick’s Park (8.15 p.m.). The Roinn 1 hurling shield follows two days later at the same venue with Ferns St. Aidan’s meeting Rathnure with an 11 a.m. start time.
As well as last night’s meeting between St. James’ and Crossabeg-Ballymurn in the New Ross Standard Under-14 football Division 2 championship final, tonight (Tuesday) also sees Blackwater face Starlights in the Division 2 shield final (6.45 p.m.).
The final Under-14 championship remaining is Division 3. Last week Our Lady’s Island/St. Fintan’s battled past St. Mary’s (Maudlintown) to the final. In the decider they will meet Fethard and that tie takes place on Tuesday of next week, with a 7 p.m. start.
If this week’s schedule is fully completed, nine games will remain in the People Newspapers Coiste na nÓg championships. The Minor Roinn 1 hurling is still at the semi-final stage with six other finals still to go.
