NEWROSS SENIORS
On Thursday, September 29, eleven teams went out in search of glory and with the course still recovering from the recent sanding the going was tough.
Once again a three-person team enjoying a six-point bonus triumphed over all the rest. Scoring 87 points (81+6), Tom Murphy (14), Larry Shannon (20) and John Joe Murray (20) took home the Paddy whiskey.
A point behind in second place came John Shalloe (5), Dan Quigley (20), Liam Glasheen (20) and Billy Redmond (21) with 86 points. The 84 points garnered by Tommy Ryan (15), Willie Naddy (19), Bill Hurley (20) and Jim Kehoe (24) proved good enough to collect third place. Nearest the pin on the ninth hole went to Michael Somers.
In almost perfect golfing conditions with a light south-easterly breeze keeping temperatures down, twelve teams took part in our weekly outing last Thursday. With placing on the fairways the order of the day, high scores were expected to be recorded.
However, that assertion was well wide of the mark with only two teams breaking 80 points whereas the normal returns would be 90 points plus.
In the end the 84 points recorded by Willie Byrne (13), Andy Ronan (14), Liam Cooley (17) and Martin Burke (25) proved good enough to claim first prize.
The 82 points scored by Paddy Shannon (10), Mick Gannon (16), Martin Forristal (20) and Jim ‘Dublin’ Ryan (24) took the runners-up spot. Third place went to Jimmy Furlong (10), Jim ‘Ross’ Ryan (18), Paul Laffan (20) and Jim Kehoe (24) with 80 points.
We have no game next Thursday as it is the final club open singles competition of the year. On the draw board for the remainder of October are Larry Shannon, Michael Brennan and Willie Naddy.
On Tuesday, October 18, we have our eagerly-awaited annual visit to Faithlegg Golf Club where we play a mixed four-person team event with our hosts. All-in cost of the day is €20 which includes golf, tea/coffee and scone on arrival.
Play commences with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. sharp and all players should be booked in by 9.15 for refreshments and team news. Please note, travellers from New Ross should be aware of the morning rush hour traffic in Waterford city.
BLACKWATER SOCIETY
The final outing of the year took place at New Ross Golf Club recently. Despite the inclement weather conditions, a total of 13 members played the full course.

ROSSLARE LADIES
On Tuesday, October 4, Hurricane Matthew may not have reached Rosslare from the U.S. but the south-easterly winds certainly blew round the course at a fierce rate.
Despite this Kit Codd had a superb win with 40 points, beating all the other ladies by five points. Kit has had a wonderful season this year and is now down to a handicap of 13. Well done Kit!
We will be having our own Ryder Cup on Saturday, October 29.... it is the As v. Bs or the locals versus the holidaymakers. Niamh Byrne is looking after the As and Caroline Archer is looking after the Bs.
It is always a fun day...and a fun night. In the evening we will be having our annual dinner dance, so get your name down for both – the sheet for golf is in the locker room, and contact Siobhán in catering for the dinner as it should all be very sociable. Anyone not able to play the golf is still very welcome to come to the dinner dance.
Tuesday, October 18, is our last singles stableford 18hole competition of the year.

ROSSLARE
The singles competition in Rosslare produced a very good score on Sunday. The winner with 39 points playing off scratch was Ian Lynch.
Ian was two over par after three holes but played the remaining holes in five under par with birdies at the fourth, 12th, 13th, 14th and 18th in halves of 37 and 32.
He won on the breakdown from Rory Deane (2) who had birdies at the first and tenth. Mark Mullen (+1) won the gross with 38 points. He had three birdies but a six at the 18th proved costly.
Third was Brendan Rossiter (1) with 38 points, and fourth was J.P. Cullen (12) with 37 points. Joe Hudson (18) was the best veteran with 36 points.

WEXFORD
Congratulations to Maurice Delaney, this year’s Howlin Cup winner. Maurice defeated Pascal Kavanagh two and one in Saturday’s final. Well done to Maurice and Pascal who were victorious over John Rackard and Martin Scallan respectively in the semi-finals.

Maurice was in action again on Sunday in the mixed foursomes final which was won by James ‘Thistle’ Nolan and Wendy Tiernan who defeated Maurice and Mary Walsh on the 16th hole. Congratulations to James and Wendy on a great win.
Tuesday’s competition was our monthly 18 holes singles. The winner was Jim Roice with a score of 39 points. In second place was Seán O’Keeffe on 37 points, with John Cleary in third place on 37 points (back eight).
The vet’s prize was won by Seamus Byrne on 37 points, and the visitor’s prize was won by Philip Murphy with 34 points (back three).
Wednesday’s 14-hole fourball was won by the deadly duo of Lar Kenny and Christy O’Gorman with a score of 34 points (back seven).
Friday’s three-person team event was won by Liam Quirke, Mick Nolan and Tom O’ Donnell with a score of 67 points.
The Senior section would like to welcome new members Brett, O’Shea and Quigley to their ranks for the coming year. Entry to Senior section competitions for the coming year is €3.
Senior section competitions take place every Tuesday morning. It was nice to see our admin. out on the course with tour guide Tommy.

There was a record entry for the first Wednesday sweep of 2016-’17 at Courtown Golf Club.

Margaret Mooney and lady President Paula Creedon brought in a great score of 42 points to win the ladies’ fourball on Tuesday, October 4.
The competition was sponsored by Wheelock Fruits and Margaret Wheelock attended the prize-giving on Tuesday evening to present the prizes to the winners.

The nine holes qualifier was won by Margaret Hughes with 14 points.
The Monday opens are continuing for October and a ladies’ open will also be held on Tuesday, October 11, which will be sponsored by Mervyn Cooney.

64SOCIETY
The 64 Golf Society outing to Wexford Golf Club on Saturday saw 30 members in action. The weather was beautiful for playing golf, on a course that played very well despite the overnight rain.

Following the outing we held our A.G.M. in 64 where Noel McCartan became our Captain for the new season 2016-2017, while Jimmy Woods will be the new Vice-Captain. Paddy O’Dowd remains on as Secretary with Paddy Dore staying as Treasurer. The committee was elected en bloc for the new season.
Following this the new Captain, Noel, made the presentation. He thanked all those who played and all those who made the day a success. He also said that he was looking forward to his year as Captain of the Society.
Our next outing will be to Coollattin Golf Club on Saturday, November 12. All members will be informed in the usual manner.
ENNISCORTHY
There was a very busy night in the clubhouse on Saturday, with presentations being made to the winners of a few long-running competitions.
The Champion of Champions competition is for the overall winners and category winners in the 26 Wednesday midweek competitions held throughout the year since April. This event was sponsored by Cooper Training Services.
The competitions through the year were sponsored by the club itself, various companies, individual club members and groups of club members (bank officials, Gardaí, Post Office employees and teachers). The club is hugely indebted to all sponsors and very grateful for their support.
Tommy Cooper congratulated the winner, Tom Hogan, an old friend, who actually taught him the finer points of the game all those years ago. A special presentation was made to club stalwart, Tom Kirwan, for all his work in the competitions room all year long which kept up his interest in golfing matters during his recent incapacitation and he says he is now ready to get back playing again and burn up the fairways. Welcome back Tom.
The club fourball competition, sponsored by Michael Dee, was won by Nigel Cullen and Joe Kelly who beat Brian and Eddie Balfe over 21 holes.
The club singles competition, also sponsored by Michael Dee, was won by Nicky Murphy who beat Vincent Byrne in the final. Nicky thanked Ciarán Tobin for all his input into organising this competition.
The golfer of the year went to Karl Cullen who said that he was really delighted to win the competition. This is a difficult competition to win in that consistency is required all year long.
