Easy for Glynn-Barntown
GLYNN-BARNTOWN 2-14 FERNS ST. AIDAN’S 0-5 GLYNN-BARNTOWN retained the Senior camogie shield title, defeating Ferns St. Aidan’s without too much fuss in Bellefield.
The Killurin girls had the game all-but sewn up at half-time, leading by 2-7 to 0-3, and were able to rely on the accuracy of Emma Walsh’s placed balls after the interval to further pad their winning margin.
Glynn-Barntown are certainly making progress, albeit slowly, in the bid to catch the top four. They were within nine points of county finalists St. Martin’s in July and there is plenty of young talent coming through at the club to bolster the numbers and increase the quality further.
They were vastly superior to Ferns in this clash. Within two minutes Glynn-Barntown had their opening goal. Annette Moroney cut through on the left to the centre, drawing defenders away from Aoife Barron.
At the perfect time the Glynn-Barntown captain released the pass to Barron whose touch brought the Ferns defence closer, but she was able to get her shot away. It wasn’t the strongest but was just brisk enough to get past Hayley Nolan before Aoife Sheil made sure.
Traded frees from the respective number 11s, Walsh and her predecessor in the county midfield, Josie Dwyer, followed. Susie McGovern and Barron combined to release Sheil for a rasping goal number two in the tenth minute as Glynn-Barntown sped clear (2-1 to 0-1).
While Georgina Moore and Eimear Nolan pointed for Ferns, scores were coming more freely at the other end. McGovern notched a couple of quality points, Walsh tagged on a pair of frees, while Chloe Cashe and Laura Dempsey also registered as Glynn-Barntown went 2-7 to 0-3 clear at the break.
A couple of soft enough frees, converted by Dwyer, dragged Ferns within eight at the start of the second-half but Glynn-Barntown were otherwise dominant.
Walsh scored six points in a row between the 40th and 58th minutes before substitute Holly Hynes rounded out the win with a close-range point in the final minute.
