Artists inspiring primary school pupils

- By MARIA PEPPER

FOUR County Wexford schools, Our Lady of Fatima and Kennedy Park in Wexford town, Craanford in Gorey and Cushinstown in Foulksmills are taking part in a Living Arts project organised by the Arts department of Wexford County Council and Wexford Arts Centre.

Artists have been appointed to work with pupils in the coming months in preparation for an exhibition next year.

Oonagh Latchford has been assigned to Our Lady of Fatima special school; Mary Claire Kehoe has been paired with Craanford NS; Tara MdGinn will work in Kennedy Park school and David Begley is the resident artist at Cushinstown NS.

Four additional artists will intern on the visual arts programme which started in October and will culminate in an exhibition of work at Wexford Arts Centre in the spring of 2017.

They are Deirdre Buttimer, Ciara Foley, Nick Jarman and Olivia O’Dwyer.

The artists and schools were selected after an open call was made for expressions of interest earlier this year which resulted in a large number of applications from around the county.

Established in 2013, the Living Arts Project is a long term visual arts educational scheme which consolidates the existing partnership between the Arts Department of Wexford County Council and Wexford Arts Centre.

The aim of this project is to provide children with an understanding and appreciation of contemporary visual art.

The standard of the work created and exhibited in 2016 and the positive feedback from everyone involved are testament to the success of the art programme.

The key elements of the artist in residence programme for primary schools in the county will continue for 2016/2017. The Arts Department of the Council and Wexford Arts Centre thanked all the schools and artists who applied for the scheme.
