DISGUST AS DOG IS LEFT FOR DEAD IN BIN OUTSIDE SCHOOL

RESCUERS AND WSPCA SAY THIS IS ONE OF THE WORST CRUELTY CASES THEY HAVE SEEN

- By DAVID TUCKER

A savagely beaten dog was rescued ‘just about alive’ after being found dumped in a wheelie bin in the grounds of a primary school in Enniscorthy.

‘It was unbelievable cruelty, the worst case of cruelty I have ever seen,’ said AES waste collection driver John Goldsmith, who rescued the dog with fellow operator Dillon Thomas.

John said that the school gates were locked when the AES crew arrived to pick up the bin last Wednesday and they had to call the caretaker to open them.

Once in the grounds, Dillon jumped out of the lorry to see how much waste was inside the bin and got the surprise of his life, when what he thought was a dead dog looked back up at him.

‘It took us 40 minutes to get the dog out.. all the rubbish was thrown in on top of him, so we had to turn it on its side and remove the rubbish first, but even then he didn’t have the strength to get out,’ said John, who contacted the WSPCA and a local vet to alert them to what had happened.

After delicately extracting the dog, the men wrapped him up in a coat and took him to the vets in their lorry.

‘We’re dog lovers and we’ve never seen anything like this,’ he said, ‘ his eyes were blurry and he wasn’t even able to sneeze without blood coming out of his nose.’

Once the badly injured dog was handed over the vets, the men resumed their round.

WSPCA inspector Cabrini Desmond said it appeared whoever dumped the dog climbed over a six-feet high fence to get into the grounds of the school.

‘ The vet said that in his opinion the dog had been beaten until it passed out and was then dumped.. they probably thought it was dead,’ she said, adding that the dog was most likely attacked on Hallowe’en.

‘I would imagine Hallowe’en has something to do with it, however, it doesn’t matter whether it was Hallowe’en or any other night, to kick a dog until it passes our is barbaric.. it’s just unreal,’ said Cabrini.

The WSPCA’S Bigid Cullen said she was horrified.

‘No words can describe the way I feel about this or those who did it,’ she said.

The dog is now being fostered and is making a good recovery.
