Domestic violence initiative launched in County Wexford

A group of statutory, voluntary and community organisations have launched a new domestic violence awareness initiative in Wexford which will see materials about domestic violence support services, as well as counselling and social work information, on display and available in the foyer areas of local courts throughout the county.

Speaking at the launch at Wexford District Court, Tusla’s Chief Operations Officer John Gibson said it was important that awareness was raised about the issue of domestic violence and the supports. ‘It is imperative that we raise awareness of this issue and that people affected have access to information about local services and support, to ensure they get the assistance they need. The launch of this initiative shows what can be achieved when statutory agencies come together with our colleagues in voluntary and community organisations to bring about local change,’ he said. Chief Superintendent John Roche said the gardai were well aware of the special place victims have in the Garda Service and the traumatic effect domestic violence has on families. ‘We are committed to fully supporting victims of domestic violence. ‘We are delighted to launch this initiative today and would like to acknowledge the support of the courts service in making this possible,’ he said. The initiative is the result of collaboration to raise awarness between organisations including Tusla, the gardai, Wexford Women’s Refuge, Wexford Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Service, Barnardos and Youth New Ross.
