Bunclody exit Leinster

-

WEXFORD CHAMPIONS Bunclody exited the Leinster Intermediate camogie championship at the quarter-final stage, falling to O’Moore’s from Laois in Rosenallis recently.

It’s always a tough ask for the Wexford clubs when they win the second tier championship, having to face the Senior champions of other Leinster counties, but Bunclody gave it a fantastic shot.

They did get off to a slow start. Elaine Downey proved almost unmarkable as she grabbed herself three goals in the first-half, helping O’Moore’s build a lead. However, after a disappointing start, Bunclody came back into the contest.

Nicola Fortune registered a trio of dead balls, Róisín Kelly picked up where she left off in the county final with a couple of points, and the evergreen Fiona Kavanagh was also on target as the Wexford club went in 3-5 to 0-6 behind at the break.

O’Moore’s managed just three points in the second period as Bunclody battled hard. Kavanagh and Kelly both scored points but the visitors got their just desserts for their efforts when Kelly dropped in a free and Fortune batted to the net from overhead.

In the end it wasn’t to be for Bunclody, despite the spirited effort. They had several superb performances with Lisa O’Neill and Rachel Kelly excellent in defence, while their three scorers stood out in attack.

It wasn’t enough to stop O’Moore’s booking a semi-final spot against Myshall from Carlow.

The season is now over for Bunclody. They can take a wellearned winter break with the opportunity to test themselves at Senior level, against some of the best club sides in the country, in 2017.
