SOCCER NEWS

The under-11 boys were at home to St Leonards on Saturday last, November 5, and brilliant goalkeeping by the visitors’ keeper denied our lads three or four certain goals in the first 20 minutes. But it was St Leonards who scored first, rattling the net halfway through the first half and maintaining the lead right through to half-time. Shortly after the resumption, Jack Ellix headed home the equaliser shortly followed by a great James O’Leary goal to give our lads the lead. Bobby Codd made sure of the points with a third goal which means that the team now have four wins and one draw so far.

The under-13s also won, ann emphatic 5-0 defeat of Rosslare Rangers. First on the score sheet was Sam Tyrrell who sprinted on to a splendid pass from Sophie Kirwin and finished it perfectly. Tristan Whelan stretched this lead before the break and Éanna Swords in goal was only troubled by one dangerous attack and managed to keep a clean sheet without much difficulty. Joe Ivory converted a penalty early in the second half to leave our lads 3-0 ahead and Bobby McKeown made it 4-0 with fifteen minutes remaining. Fionn Walsh who had been rock steady in defence moved forward into the attack at this stage and was rewarded with a goal near the end of a great return to form by this promising team. Joe Ivory was ‘player-ofthe-match’ with Matt Gahan, Fionn Walsh and Tristan Whelan starring in defence.

On Sunday, November 6, the Men’s ‘A’ team were away to Taghmon and won by 2-1. Paul ‘Roddy’ Doyle brought them level after they had gone a goal down and a Michael Rossiter special gave them the lead and the vital league points. The men’s ‘B’ team were also away, taking on Duncannon and losing by 2-6. Understrenght from the start, they were under pressure throughout but Dean Fortune still managed to score twice.
