MONAGEER resident Johanna McCabe (née Hassey) was in her 98th year when she passed away peacefully on October 16 in the loving care of her son Benny.

Born in Davidstown to Maria and John Hassey of Toberona, she spent her childhood years in Toberona and later in Clochmills where she sadly lost her mother at an early age.

She was a proud and loyal Davidstown woman who loved the outdoor life. She spent happy moments enjoying her garden where she delighted in cultivating beautiful displays of flowers and shrubs, particularly in the springtime, her favourite time of the year.

It was in 1945 she met and married David McCabe of Ballyvergin, Adamstown. At that time, she moved to Monageer where they spent the rest of their lives together. Johanna was a woman of strong faith of which was reflected in her great ability to take good and bad times in her stride. Her faith inspired her to visit the wonderful pilgrimage shrines of Fatima, Lourdes and many others. This in turn gave her a great love of travel in general which she really enjoyed in her later years.

Johanna loved meeting people and whether in the countryside of the town loved to chat about anything and everything. She made everyone feel welcome in her home in Corbally. People always left her company happier after having the cup of tea with her.

She was predeceased by her husband, David and her only brother Bob whom she thought the world of.

She is sadly missed by her family and many friends.

A large crowd attended her funeral on Tuesday October 18 at the church of St Patrick’s Monageer followed by her final resting place in the adjoining cemetery.

Johanna’s months mind Mass will be celebrated on Saturday November 12 at 7 p.m. in St Patrick’s Church Monageer.

May she rest in peace.
