Rovers edge out Moyne in derby

SHAMROCK Rovers earned the bragging rights after edging out local rivals Moyne Rangers in the FAI Junior Cup second round on Sunday.

Rovers took the lead after 30 minutes when Martin McKeown found Ricky Dwyer in space and he arrowed the ball to the corner of the net.

The reigning Premier Division champions extended their advantage five minutes later with McKeown again involved, this time applying a superb finish.

Moyne managed to pull one back before the break when Tomás Mahon converted a penalty after Alan Tobin was brought down in the area, but they couldn’t force an equaliser after the interval.

Corach Ramblers joined them in the draw for the next round by overcoming Highview Athletic 2-0. Niall Harney and Darren ‘Daz’ Sinnott grabbed the goals for Ramblers.

North End United had to endure the heartache of a penalty shoot-out defeat, when they lost 6-5 on spot-kicks away to Crettyard after a 2-2 draw after extra-time.

The Sky Blues began the game brightly and could have been out of sight in the opening half hour, with Paul Murphy, Adam Beary and Jason Murphy all spurning chances.

Having weathered the storm, the County Laois outfit went ahead on 65 minutes, but Jason Murphy finished with aplomb ten minutes later to draw the visitors level.

With ten minutes remaining Crettyard regained the lead with appeals for offside falling on deaf ears, but again North End showed great fighting spirit to equalise, thanks to a superb strike from Adam Beary.

North End were within inches of winning it two minutes into injury time when Jason Murphy deftly chipped the goalkeeper, but his effort drifted just wide of the upright.

Bridge Rovers also bowed out of the competition when they were beaten 5-1 in Castlebridge by a strong Evergreen F.C. outfit.
