HISTORY WEBSITE

A large amount of information and folklore was collected from National school children in the 1930s. The information from pupils in Boolavogue NS which was collected by Henry Armstrong NT is now available on the internet at duchas.ie/ga/cbes/5009295.

In one section, James Gahan, Barmona tells that there are three houses in that townland, all slated with around 20 people living in the townsland. Lizzie McClean, writing about Knockavocca, stated that 22 people lived there. There were three slated houses there, four thatched houses and the ruins of two more as well as two bogs and one quarry.

In another section, Aidan Farrington, Glenbaun, writes of his uncle John O’Leary, a noted hurler, who played at full-forward on the Wexford team which won the all-Ireland in 1910, beating Tipperary by 7-0 to 6-2 in Jones’ Road, Dublin.

SOCCER NEWS

The under-12s beat Caim United at home on Saturday last thanks to a great Alex Keegan goal. The under-14s suffered the heartbreak of a 0-4 loss to Duncannon after making the long journey south.

The under-16s also lost, being given a master class in attacking soccer away to Gorey Rangers and losing out by 2-8 in the end. The game was over at half-time but our lads showed great spirit and never stopped trying. Ryan Milling scored twice in the second half but this defeat puts paid to the team’s dreams of winning a league title.

On Sunday the 13th the Ladies’ team travelled to Stoney Rovers and lost by 0-4. The men’s ‘A’ team also lost, going down 1-2 away to Curracloe United. Michael Sweeney’s goal, a stunning spectacular score from a free kick was a small consolation in the end.

The men’s ‘B’ team provided the only really good news on Sunday, travelling to unbeaten Castledockrell and coming home with full points thanks to a 6-3 win. Starting with only 10 players, our lads held out till reinforcements arrived and then attacked with gusto. Niall Finn scored his first goal straight away to give us the 1-0 lead at the interval. Castledockrell must have had an interesting chat in the dressing room at half-time because they came out fully charged and fired-up for the second-half. Within two minutes they had equalised and shortly afterwards pulled ahead. Ian Hawkins headed our lads back level. Castledockrell pulled ahead again, converting a penalty and then Dean Fortune’s magic left-foot smashed home a long range shot for the goal of the game. The excitement kept on going and in the end a great performance saw our lads bamboozle the league leaders at home and collect maximum points in a game that could be the most important league game of the season.

The club would like to pass on their sympathies to the Doran family on their bereavement and assure them that that they are in their thoughts and prayers.
